Correspondence and manuscripts, Erich and Luise Mendelsohn, Series I. 1910-1953

Selected Erich and Luise Mendelsohn correspondence: 1910-1953

Physical Description: 6 box(es)

Scope and Contents note

Series I contains personal correspondence between Erich and Luise Mendelsohn, covering the years 1910-1953, with assorted manuscripts and notes by Erich Mendelsohn, letters to Esther Mendelsohn and Erich's students and colleagues, and letters from Marianne Hahn, H. Th. Wijdeveld, Lewis Mumford, and Victoria Ocampo. The correspondence is arranged chronologically.
Letters from Erich Mendelsohn are all typed copies, many of which have been published in Briefe eines Architekten (Munich: Prestel, 1961). The letters from Luise are handwritten. They write about their personal life, impressions of political events, family concerns, travel experiences, and topics in art and architecture. Erich Mendelsohn discusses the work of other modern artists and architects, most notably Feininger, Gropius, Kandinsky, Le Corbusier, El Lissitzky, Neutra, Oud, Picasso, Poelzig, Mies van der Rohe, Van de Velde, Otto Wagner, Worringer, and Wright. He also reflects on the historical development of modern architecture and weighs the importance of such movements as Neo-Impressionism, Expressionism, and Futurism. Mendelsohn's letters also give detailed descriptions of his architectural commissions from conception to realization, as well as descriptions and evaluations of buildings and cities he encountered during his travels through Europe, the Soviet Union, the Middle East, and America. Among the letters are enclosures such as programs, pressed flowers and photographs, as well as assorted documents.
