Abstract: Contains incoming and outgoing correspondence of Annie Montague Alexander, concerning the establishment, work with and gifts to the Museum of Vertebrae Zoology (MVZ) at the University of California, Berkeley. The bulk of the letters are from Joseph Grinnell, the first Director of the MVZ. Other correspondents include Seth Bertram Benson, E. Raymond Hall and Alden H. Miller. Also includes scrapbooks containing photographs and copies of letters written by Alexander and her father, Samuel T. Alexander, while on safari in British East Africa (present-day Kenya) in 1904. Collection does not include correspondence with her companion Louise Kellogg. Papers concerning the establishment and work with the University of California Museum of Paleontology can be found at that museum. Additions (box 4): Contains correspondence (1933-1948), indexes to various Alexander and Kellog collections (location unknown), and numerous plant specimens from Cisco and Lake Tahoe, Calif. The specimens are mounted on card stock listing the name of the plant and the place and date where it was collected.

Acquisition Information

The Annie Montague Alexander Papers were transferred to The Bancroft Library by the University of California, Berkeley, Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in 1965. Additions were made in February 1967. Additions of copies of Alexander's outgoing correspondence were made by Alice Q. Howard, heir to Louise Kellogg's estate, on April 29, 2005 and in 2007.

Biographical Information

Annie Montague Alexander was a naturalist, explorer, and patron of the sciences. She founded both the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ) and the University of California Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) on the Berkeley campus and was the benefactress of those museums for more than 40 years.

Scope and Content Note

Contains photographs and copies of letters written by Annie Montague Alexander and her father Samuel T. Alexander to family while on safari in British East Africa from April to August in 1904. Similar letters and photographs are in each one and follow the course of the trip from beginning to end, but are not exactly the same. A third volume that did not contain copies of the letters only variants of the photographs was transferred to the Pictorial Collections of the Bancroft library and can be found under call number BANC PIC 1966.013--ALB Also includes some miscellaneous items.
