Biography / Administrative History

This collection consists of records kept by long-time San Joaquin County Sheriffs Thomas Cunningham(1871-1899) and Walter Sibley (1899-1915). Cunningham was an early advocate of many techniques of modern criminology, including fingerprinting. He kept thorough photographic records of all prisoners in his own jail and collected photographs of prisoners in other California jails as well.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection consists of three County Jail Log Books, thirteen volumes of Mug Books (criminal photograph record books) containing approximately 7600 photographs, and a State of California Parole Violators ledger. The Jail Log Books provide: name of arresting officer, crime and punishment, as well as prisoner name and number. An index to names of individuals in the Mug Books is available.
