Abstract: James Marshall Miller was a historian with an interest in the missions of Spanish California. He surveyed many of them and supervised adobe work in the restoration of Mission La Purísima Concepción. The collection consists of correspondence, notes, clippings, and ephemera relating to missions and historic buildings in California.

Biography

James Marshall Miller graduated from the University of Southern Calif. with a BA in history; became interested in the missions of Spanish California, making careful surveys of many; constructed an historically accurate model of Mission San Diego used for the restoration of that mission in 1932; supervised adobe work in the restoration of Mission La Purísima Concepción; visited all the missions and other historical buildings in Southern California and Monterey, gathering materials related to their history.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of correspondence, notes, clippings, and ephemera relating to California missions and historic buildings. The photographs of missions and buildings made or collected by Miller were transferred to the picture collection.
