Background
Bob Moretti was first elected in 1964 to represent the 42nd Assembly District of Los Angeles County. He was elected Speaker of the Assembly in 1971 and again in 1973. Under Moretti's leadership, the Assembly reformed the Welfare and MediCal systems, enacted a school finance-homeowner tax relief package, approved sweeping environmental and consumer protection legislation, greatly increased benefits for working people and opened its own proceedings to more intense public scrutiny. Other areas of Moretti's legislative interest have included health care, problems of the aged, crime control, tax reform, occupational safety, and welfare of children. In 1974, Moretti unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for Governor.
