Richard P. Henke Chinese and Russian currency

Processing Information

These incremental materials were processed to a baseline standard that employs an accession inventory for description. An accession inventory is a basic description of an archival collection with no attempt at intellectual arrangement. The depth of description varies depending on the format of the materials and the amount of pre-existing description received when the materials were acquired.

Scope and Contents

This series is composed of around 77 historical Chinese and Russian financial bonds, about 2,000 Chinese banknotes, prison script chits, food chits, and counterfeit notes used in bank employee training collected by Richard P. Henke. Henke, born in Beijing in 1934, is the son of Presbyterian medical missionaries Harold Eugene Henke and Jessie Mae Paddock Henke. His family resided in Beijing from 1934 to 1940, then returned to the US during World War II. In 1946, they went back to Beijing until 1948, when they moved to Lockport, Illinois due to the escalating civil war in China.
Henke went to Knox College (1952-1956) and Stanford University School of Medicine (1956-1960). Settling in San Francisco in 1963, he finished his Pathology Residency at UC School of Medicine in 1966. After practicing pathology in San Francisco, he relocated to Southern California, serving at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center from 1970 to 1991. He held teaching roles at UC Irvine, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal State Dominguez Hills.
During retirement, Henke remained active in Southern California's American Society for Microbiology and volunteered for the Palos Verdes Library District. He participated on the Board of the Rolling Hills Community Association and served on the Planning Commission for the City of Rolling Hills.
