Abstract: Carrie Estelle Betzold (1875-1958) married Edward L. Doheny, a Wisconsin-born Colorado miner who discovered oil in Los Angeles
in 1892. When her husband died, Estelle Doheny inherited a fortune, with which she created a fine book collection. The collection
consists of correspondence, photographs, and printed material related to Estelle Doheny and her library.
Physical location: Stored off-site at SRLF. Advance notice is required for access to the collection. Please contact the UCLA Library, Department

Carrie Estelle Betzold was born in 1875; married Edward L. Doheny, a Wisconsin-born Colorado miner who discovered oil in Los
Angeles in 1892; when her husband died, Estelle Doheny inherited a fortune, with which she created a fine book collection
and funded various Catholic charities; died in 1958.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, photographs, and printed material related to Estelle Doheny and her library. Includes
2 letters from Doheny to Robert O. Schad, a photocopy of the Doheny bibliography, and 3 8x10 black and white photographs of
Doheny, Schad, and Lucille Miller examining Doheny's Gutenberg bible.
