Description
These papers, originals and copies, consist of correspondence, documents,
accounts, and vouchers relating mainly to General Placido Vega's secret mission to obtain articles of
war and funds in San Francisco, California, for the republican government of Benito Juarez in Mexico
against the French invaders of Napoleon III. There is also material on Vega's activities in connection
with volunteers from the United States in forming an expedition to invade Mexico, the Mexican "Juntas
Patrioticas" in the United States, and military operations in Mexico (1858-1869). Includes
correspondence with Benito Juarez, Matias Romero and Jesus Gonzalez Ortega. See also the published
