Biography
The Stockton Police Department was founded in 1850. During the period
represented by these records, the depart ment was made up of thirteen officers,
a captain and a chief. From 1885 until 1890 the police station was located
between Hunter and Market Streets. Later the department was housed on the first
floor of the county courthouse. The city and San Joaquin County shared a jail
on Market Street between Hunter and San Joaquin until a new jail---later
referred to as "Cunningham's Castle" for long-time County Sheriff, Thomas
Cunningham---opened at the corner of San Joaquin and Channel Streets (1893).
This facility was equipped with a basement emergency hospital.
Stockton Chiefs of Police did not hold office long during the late 19th
century. W.N. Edwards was Chief from 1884 through 1886, B.F. Rodgers held
office during 1887, O.G. Langmaid was Chief in 1888, W.S. Fowler held the
office from 1889 through 1890, Isaac H. Robinson was Chief in 1891-92, Samuel
Henry had the honor in 1893-94, Milton H. Kingsbury was Chief in 1895-96 and
John D. Gall was Chief from 1897 through 1901.

name, list of property of arrestee
II. STOCKTON CITY JAIL RECORDS **Each record contains the following
information: arrestee name, date of arrest, date of discharge, offense,
arresting officer name, remarks
