Identified in gold letters as "Crane Company. Plumbing, Gas, Steam, and
Water Supplies, 1893" at 23 & 25 First Street, San Francisco, California,
this 275 pp. illustrated catalog of plumbing supplies describes, lists and
provides sizes and prices of fittings and equipment. The newspapers clippings
pasted over the Crane Catalogue pages are mostly unidentified and undated.
There are over 96 pages on the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. Other topics
include articles on Presidents' wives, President and Mrs. Mckinley, Queen
Victoria, lectures, woman suffrage, society news, religion and the afterlife,
food and beauty aids.
Background
This scrapbook of newspaper clippings from San Francisco and Stockton
papers offers few clues as to who created it, other than that it was pasted in
a Crane Plumbing Company catalog and that the articles chosen reflect a
Stockton woman's interests. The scrapbook has been styled "San Francisco
Earthquake Scrapbook" because approximately one-third of all pages in the book
are devoted to this topic.
