Biography

McDill was born in Illinois in 1874; AB, University of California at Berkeley, 1899; attended University of Southern California Law School; admitted to California Bar, 1904; engaged in private law practice until 1927; became a judge, Los Angeles Municipal Court, in 1927; member and president of Los Angeles School Board of Education, 1933-37.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of the working papers and files of George McDill, a prominent Los Angeles attorney, judge, and president of the Los Angeles School Board. The materials relate primarily to his activities on the School Board during 1933-37, and include McDill's plans for the first All Year School in Los Angeles.

Expanded Scope and Content

This collection consists of the working papers and files of George McDill, prominent Los Angeles attorney, Judge, and president of the Los Angeles School Board, and relate primarily to his activities as member and president of the Los Angeles School Board of Education during the years between 1933 and 1937. In addition to the many official papers are McDill's plans for an All Year School, the first in Los Angeles.
The collection is organized alphabetically by subject headings; most of these headings were established by McDill for his filing system, and have been retained here for ease of arrangement. It should be noted, however, that all materials are inter-related, so that information on any given aspect or incident of these papers may be found in several different places.
This collection is only one received by the library concerning the Board of Education during this period. The papers of John R. Kelley overlap those here described, both in time and coverage, and could therefore be profitably used simultaneously.
