Biographical Sketch

John R. Hastings was supervising editor of the Hearst newspapers from 1926 until his death in 1942. He began his long newspaper career, after graduation from high school, on the Los Angeles Express, going from there to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner, the New York Press and Evening Telegram, the New York Daily News, the New York Globe the New York Times, and the New York Journal, for which he served as managing editor from 1906 to 1926.

Scope and Content

These papers, which were given to the Bancroft Library in June 1950 by his widow, relate primarily to his association with the Hearst newspaper organization. Included are letters from William Randolph Hearst and other members of his staff, 1909-1942, and copies or drafts of Hastings replies; letters relating his efforts to have his plays produced, 1910-1912; copies of his plays; clippings; and biographical information about him assembled by his wife.
Letters written by Hastings are arranged chronologically; letters to him, alphabetically be name of correspondent with a miscellany of single letters at the beginning of the file. Letters from play producers and actors relating to his playwriting follow the rest of the correspondence. All of the material is housed in one carton. A list of the more important correspondents follows. Photographs have been transferred to the Pictorial Collection.
