University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Library Services was founded in 1958. The first class graduated in
1961.In 1973 the School of Library Service (SLS) was renamed Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS). In
1993, threatened by Chancellor Young's "Professional Schools Restructuring Initiative," the Graduate School of Education merged
with the GSLIS program to create the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSEIS).
The UCLA/GSLIS Alumni Association was incorporated in 1972, with its membership extending back to the first graduating class
of 1961. Currently, the official name of the association is "University of California, Los Angeles Information Studies Alumni
Association." The stated purpose of the Alumni Association is: To guide and advance the educational interests of students
and alumni of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the Department of Information Studies, and to maintain
among the alumni a spirit of fellowship and service to librarianship. To assist the advance of the students of the school
by guidance, gifts, grants, scholarships and loans for this purpose. To promote the continuing professional education of the
alumni.
Record Series 703 contains the administrative and financial files of the treasurer of UCLA's Graduate School of Library and
Information Science Alumni Association. Files include Association rosters, correspondence, financial statements, reports,
and Association letterhead.
