Abstract: Mary Pearson Goodwin (1920- ) was born in Newport, Rhode Island. She was a prolific and award-winning medical illustrator and a member of the first public expedition to Antarctica in mid-1960s. The collection contains books, journals, notebooks, photographs, clippings, drawings, video cassettes, audio cassettes, memorabilia, a diary, correspondence, catalogs, slides, invoices, scrapbooks, index cards, films, maps, and paintings relating to Antarctica compiled by Goodwin.

Biography

Mary Pearson Goodwin (also known as Mary Joe Goodwin) was born in 1920 in Newport, Rhode Island; attended Sarah Lawrence College and Boston Museum School, where she was trained in art; settled in Los Angeles in 1951; became a prolific and award-winning medical illustrator; member of first public expedition to Antarctica in mid-1960s, and returned twice; wrote A Mountain Reprieve: Trekking in Nepal (1975); she died on September 13, 1993 in Los Angeles.

Scope and Content

Collection contains books, journals, notebooks, photographs, clippings, drawings, video cassettes, audio cassettes, memorabilia, a diary, correspondence, catalogs, slides, invoices, scrapbooks, index cards, films, maps, and paintings relating to Antarctica compiled by Goodwin. Also contains writings by Goodwin, an author and title bibliography, a jigsaw puzzle and a stuffed penguin. Includes books on exploration (including a rare copy of Earnest Shackleton's Aurora Australis (1908) and biographical accounts. Subjects include geology, mapmaking, natural history, flora, fauna, fish, whales, penguins, and the important expeditions sponsored by Australia, Britain, and France.
