Biography

Born in Lowell, Mass., June 26, 1834, Charles Bigelow Cutting came to California May 25, 1852 on the Steamer, Central America, with his father at the age of 18. In 1853 they settled in Chinese Camp, Tuolumne County. There he engaged in real estate, insurance, and collections. He was appointed Postmaster of Chinese Camp in 1861, elected Justice of the Peace in 1867, 1871, 1879, and granted Notary Public for Jamestown in 1902 by Governor Gage. His business interests include the Chinese Camp, Jamestown & Sonora Telegraph Co., the Cutting & Gould's Celebrated Chemical Erasive Soap Co., the YoSemite Transfer Co., and the YoSemite Turnpike Road Co. He belonged to the Jamestown Guards and the Chinese Camp Hook and Ladder Co. He died in Tuolumne County on August 4, 1919.
