Acquisition Information

The Personalities and Activities of the Self-Help Cooperatives of California photographs were given to The Bancroft Library by Paul Schuster Taylor in 1957.

Scope and Content

The Personalities and Activities of the Self-Help Cooperatives of California collection contains 80 mounted silver gelatin prints taken from 1933-34. The prints were originally included in the "Exhibition of Photographs and Etchings of Personalities and Activities in the Self-Help Cooperatives of California," held in 1934 at The University of California at Berkeley. The exhibition was organized by University of California Professor of Economics Paul Schuster Taylor, following his study of the self-help cooperative organizations formed in California during the early years of the Great Depression. The intent of the exhibition was to document the diverse range of individuals (often referred to as "cooperators"), activities, and challenges which characterized the cooperative effort. Among the organizations represented in the exhibition were the Unemployed Exchange Association, the Pacific Cooperative League, the Orange County Cooperatives, the Unemployed Citizens' League, and the Unemployed Cooperative Relief Association. The exhibition photographs were provided by the California State Emergency Relief Administration and by the photographers. Also featured in the exhibition were etchings by Dayton Brown of Los Angeles.
The collection includes the work of such notable California photographers as Dorothea Lange, Willard Van Dyke, Blanding Sloan, and Imogen Cunningham. Other photographers featured in the collection include Mary Jeanette Edwards, C.F. Adam, and Professor Taylor.
