Scope and Content
The prints in this collection are arranged into six legajos and relate chiefly to the missions of New
Mexico in the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. They were copied by the Library of Congress
for Professor France V. Scholes. He arranged and listed these documents in the Biblioteca in 1927. He
outlined his work and listed the manuscripts in an article written in 1928 for the
New Mexico
Historical Review
(Vol. 3:3, pp. 301-311, "Manuscripts for the History of New Mexico in the
National Library in Mexico City.")* [*The Bancroft Library has copies only of Legajos 1-6.] The titles
which are used in this Calendar are copied from Prof. Scholes article, except for two which were not
given in the article.
Folder numbers should be used in requesting these documents, as well as the archival citations.
Note: Annotated in Ignacio del Río's Guía del Archivo Franciscano for some docs. in
Legajo 1. Very difficult to correlate Río's and Scholes' descriptions. VCF 11/25/80
