Description
The collection consists of personal letters from Lemuel and William Newcomb to their family and letters from Lemuel to Julia Palmer, whom he married. Also included are the diaries of Lemuel (1861-1864), genealogical information, and post-war military papers.
Background
Lemuel E. Newcomb was born in Grand Menan, Province of New Brunswick, Maine, in 1838. He enlisted in the 11th Regiment of Maine Volunteers, Infantry, on November 4, 1861 as a sergeant. He was promoted to 2nd. Lt. in May 1862, to 1st. Lt. in May 1863, and to Captain in July 1864. He was discharged in November 1864. He died at Los Gatos, California, August 6, 1921.
