Scope and Contents note

The correspondence consists of approximately 1,000 items written to Folgore, 300 of which are from Futurists such as Marinetti (11), Bontempelli (5), Govoni (4), Prampolini (6), and Severini (6), or from colleagues belonging to a later phase of Folgore's life. Approximately 400 items are from literary associations and publishers, including some 100 items from Franco Campitelli. There are approximately 500 letters from children responding to Folgore's radio programs. Approximately 50 letters or fragments of letters written by Folgore are filed together under his name. Letters to or from Folgore's wife, Valentina Scalzi, are filed together under her name.

Letters in Boxes 1 and 2 are from Folgore's Futurist colleagues, and from fellow writers, friends, and editors from his post-Futurist period. There are approximately 300 items organized alphabetically by the author's last name.

Some letters are primarily replies to riddle contests. A number of letters include childrens' drawings of Pinocchio and other characters in the program. An occasional letter includes a photograph of the correspondent or a drawn self-portrait. "Risposto" is written in colored pencil across many of them.

Folgore's manuscripts are organized by genre, within which category they are in only rough chronological order since most items are not dated and many do not have titles. Genre is itself a somewhat problematic organizational category in this archive since a large number of manuscripts comprise at least two; for example, radio plays may include entire poems or even be composed entirely of poetry. Moreover, it is not always possible to determine whether or not a given manuscript is a theater play or radio play, or whether a given story may be more appropriately designated as a prose piece.

Poetry manuscripts occupy 1.5 linear feet and include 29 handwritten pages (10 poems) from Ponti sull'oceano with corrections, possibly by Marinetti, and 153 pages of the proofs of Ponti. There are also 15 handwritten draft pages of Città veloce, and 16 pages of Liriche, Folgore's last work of serious poetry and the one often considered his best, though it is not a Futurist work. There are 41 handwritten pp. of poetic parodies from Poeti allo specchio and typewritten manuscripts of that volume and of Poeti contraluce, though without corrections. There is also a handwritten manuscript entitled "Dizionario letterario poetico," published as Alfabeto umoristico? (1945), a large number of poems for children, and approximately 200 handwritten pages of poems for Folgore's "Musa Vagabonda" column.

Theater manuscripts occupy 1.5 linear feet and include approximately 20 Futurist pantomimes and ballets, numerous plays of, on the average, 10 pages in length, and handwritten and typewritten drafts of three full-length plays, Piovuta dal cielo (1941), Quadrante d'amore (1927), and Esculapio al neon (1956). There are also many manuscripts of skits and plays for children.

Fiction manuscripts occupy 1 linear foot and include the handwritten draft of Folgore's novel, La città dei girasoli (1920), handwritten drafts of fables and allegories for children and of short stories for adults.

Lectures, occupying .5 linear feet, consist mainly of Folgore's talks about humor.

Prose writings occupy .5 linear feet and include 13 pages of Folgore's journal account of his travels with Marinetti and other Futurists, a handwritten draft of "Dinamica futurista," and several retrospective essays about Futurism and Futurists.

Radio play manuscripts occupy 6 linear feet; a relatively small portion of these are television plays, specifically noted as such within the finding aid. These range from 1928 through 1967 and, with the exception of the Grammofono della veritá series, are almost exclusively for children.

Folgore's translations occupy .5 linear feet and include handwritten and typewritten drafts of his translation and adaptation for radio of Calderon's Il Gran Teatro del Mondo and of Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale.
