1. Portfolios

Scope and Content Note

Seventy-one subject files created by Ruth Clark Lert are retained in original order with original titles. The portfolios consist primarily of clippings and ephemera which briefly illustrate aspects of twentieth-century dance history. The strongest portfolios are those which focus on individuals, including Fred Astaire, Martha Graham, Gene Kelley, Marcel Marceau, Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis, Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis, and Mary Wigman. Other notable portfolios are Bay Area Dance, Bolshoi in USA, Encounter Movement, Handicapped, Notation and Bauhaus.

Scope and Content Note

Printed items (arranged chronologically) providing information on American dance companies and particularly the American Ballet Theatre. Posters for many dance companies including: American Ballet Theatre, Alwin Nikolais Company, Murray Louis Company, Diaghilev's Ballet Russe, and Bella Lewitzky Company. Photographs taken by Lert primarily in the Los Angeles area of various small dance companies. 6. Dance Criticism

Scope and Content Note

John Martin and Walter Terry's reviews offer examples of dance criticism, focusing primarily on New York dance performances. Other printed items pertain to professional dance critic associations. 7. Dance Education

Scope and Content Note

Lert's lecture notes and other teaching materials, as well as reports and articles, show the evolution of dance education and document dance technique, theory and history. Printed items on specific dance and music education programs, such as Orff Schulwerk and Panorama of Dance, and materials concerning professional conferences explore the development of dance education in public schools and professional dance education. Photographs taken by Ruth Clark Lert depict various workshops and dance camps, primarily in Idyllwild. Items date from 1949 to 1985. 8. Dance History, Research and Theory

Scope and Content Note

Reports, articles, newsletters and programs from professional conferences provide overviews of dance history and dance theory. Issues of Delvings into Dance Historyand a dissertation on Los Angeles dance in the 1930's are examples of dance historiography. Items date from 1939 to 1986.
 

9. Dance in Print

Scope and Content Note

Arranged chronologically, miscellaneous printed materials and ephemera illustrate dance in the United States and world dance. Materials include clippings, broadsides, calendars, advertisements, periodicals, posters and the first issue of The Denishawn Magazine. Items date from 1930 to 1991.
 

10. Dance Notation

Scope and Content Note

Printed items focus on the Dance Notation Bureau and different notation methodologies, including Danscore, Labanotation, Choroscript and Sutton Shorthand. Items date from 1946 to 1983. See also Portfolio 57: Notation.
 

11. Dance Therapy and Kinesiology

Scope and Content Note

Printed items document the use of dance and movement in physical and mental rehabilitation and chronicle the American Dance Therapy Association's annual conference. Items date from 1948 to 1982. See also Portfolios 31-32: Exercise Fitness and Portfolio 68: Therapy, Dance and Kinesiology.
 

12. Dancers and Choreographers

Scope and Content Note

Sixteen issues of the Dance Horizon Spotlight Series provide career sketches and performance photographs of prominent American and international ballet dancers. Other printed items are clippings, calendars, posters and programs documenting aspects of various dancers' careers. Photographs taken by Ruth Clark Lert are of various dancers and include Bella Lewitzky and Anna Halprin. Items date from 1962 to 1985. Scope and Content Note

Government documents from state and federal organizations and other printed items illustrate the government's relationship to performing and visual arts. The series contains National Endowment for the Arts guidelines and grant applications, clippings concerning art subsidies, and a directory from the California Arts Commission. Scope and Content Note

Serials Challenge and Outlook, brochures, programs, reports and writings reflect Lert's interest in dance and movement therapy, especially for brain-injured children. Items date from 1963 to 1970. See also Portfolios 40-42: Handicapped.

Scope and Content Note

Newspaper clippings and Kennedy Center Honors programs document ceremonies and award recipients. Items date from 1971 to 1989.
 

18. Libraries and Archives

Scope and Content Note

Printed materials, including catalogs and reports, provide information on libraries and archives which hold significant collections on dance. Items date from 1970 to 1993.
 

19. Music, Costume and Photography

Scope and Content Note

Printed items, including posters, pertain to arts and artists related to dance, music and composers, costume design and the photographer Barbara Morgan. Items date from 1962 to 1990. See also Portfolio 54: Music; and Portfolios 65-66: Igor Stravinsky.
 

20. Olympics

Scope and Content Note

Printed items focus on the Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival (1984) and the Olympic figure skater Laurence Owens. Items date from 1960 to 1961.

Scope and Content Note

Stamps depict dance in art, entertainers, dance, performing arts events and dance history. Other international stamps depict dance and other performing arts and are arranged alphabetically by issuing nation. Items date from 1965 to 1987. See also Portfolio 64: Stamps.
 

22. World Dance

Scope and Content Note

Ethnographic photographs taken (ca. 1936) by Vicki Baum illustrate Balinese dance and ceremony. Printed items including posters focus on international and ethnic dance, particularly Balinese and Kabuki and date from 1948 to 1984. See also Portfolio 30: Ethnic Dance.
 

23. Ruth Clark Lert Correspondence and Writings

Scope and Content Note

A small series comprised of essays by Lert on dance and movement, and business correspondence concerning her collecting of dance materials.
 

24. Audio Recordings

Scope and Content Note

Most interviews of dancers and choreographers are off-air recordings. Nineteen tapes (nos. 34, 109-12, 114-15, 129, 173-4, 177, 194-201) are originals made by Lert and focus on Lert herself, Bella Lewitzky, Eugene Loring, Harald Kreutzberg, Trudi Schoop, Vicki Baum and Mary Wigman. Originals are clearly indicated in the container list , including the date that each was made. Tapes are arranged alphabetically by surnames of the principal interviewee on side one (A) of each tape. Other recordings include music for dance classes. Tapes date from 1951 to 1990.
 

25. Photographs

Scope and Content Note

Prints and negatives within this series comprise a comprehensive portfolio of Ruth Clark Lert's photography. Photographs depict dancers and choreographers in class, rehearsal, and performance. The photographs are subdivided into eight subseries based on subject of the photographs: 25.1. Auditions, 25.2. California State University, 25.3. Children, 25.4. Dancers at Work: Dance in Los Angeles, 25.5. Loring Dance Players, 25.6. Television, 25.7. UCLA and 25.8. Negatives and Clippings. Most negatives correspond with the prints, but some negatives do not have a matching print in the collection. (1956-1972)
 

26. Programs

Scope and Content Note

Rare programs document performances of Ted Shawn, Ruth St. Denis, Pavlova and Ballet Russe. Other souvenir programs and playbills collected by Lert reflect the collection's topical focus, with heavy emphasis on California dance companies, ethnic and world dance, Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey and Marcel Marceau. Approximately 300 programs tangential to the collection's subject emphases were separated into the department's Dance Programs Collection; these are from Ballet Russes, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet and several Broadway musicals. Items date from 1910 to 1989.
