Historical Note

These papers were accumulated, mainly during the 1960s, by William Friedland and Paul Lubeck in the course of academic research on trade unionism in Africa. In 1976 Paul Lubeck was an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. In 1962, when the research documented in the papers was being carried out, William Friedland was an Assistant Professor at the New York State School of Industrial Relations at Cornell University.
