Scope and Content

Collection of materials for a History of the University of California for the Centennial of the instution in 1968. Includes correspondence, reports, interviews, tape recordings, and negative microfilm of source documents.

Scope and Content

This collection represents the work of Walton Bean, professor of history, to collect material for a history of the University for the Centennial of the institution in 1968. Bean apparently proposed this project to President Sproul as early as 1950 and began to collect materials as a regular research project at that time. A few years later, funding was received from the President's Office for the support and continuation of the project. It was apparently at this stage that Rena Vassar and Alex Callow were employed as research assistants in the project. Bean's involvement in the project seems to have ended about 1960, although a few materials in the present collection date after that time. It is not at all clear how these later materials came to be integrated into the present collection.
The University later established another group, under Verne Stadtman, to prepare the Centennial publications. These files are also in University Archives and may also be consulted by those interested in University history.
