Description
This collection represents the work of Walton Bean, professor of history, to collect material for a history of the University
for the Centennial of the institution in 1968. Bean apparently proposed this project to President Sproul as early as 1950
and began to collect materials as a regular research project at that time. A few years later, funding was received from the
President's Office for the support and continuation of the project. It was apparently at this stage that Rena Vassar and Alex
Callow were employed as research assistants in the project. Bean's involvement in the project seems to have ended about 1960,
although a few materials in the present collection date after that time. It is not at all clear how these later materials
came to be integrated into the present collection.
