Biographical / Historical
The Committee on Sites for the Southern Branch was created to serve the University of California (UC) Board of Regents in
an advisory capacity. In 1923, Regent Edward A. Dickson proposed the creation of the committee to help select the site for
the permanent campus of the University of California, Southern Branch (now known as University of California, Los Angeles).
On December 2, 1924, UC President W. W. Campbell appointed seventeen citizens of the Los Angeles area to serve on this committee.
The Committee consisted of: Henry W. O'Melveny, James R. Martin, Harry Chandler, W. E. Dunn, Guy C. Earl, Jr., Meyer Elsasser,
William M. Garland, Edward D. Lyman, Maynard McFie, Henry S. McKee, Clinton E. Miller, Irwin J. Muma, Henry M. Robinson, Joseph
Sartori, Charles F. Stern, Walter K. Tuller, and W. L. Valentine.
Although more than 100 possible sites were suggested to the Regents and the Committee on Sites for the Southern Branch, only
seventeen were formally presented by site proponents at an open meeting. Among these sites were: Schiappa Pietra, Chino-Spadra,
San Fernando, Burbank, Whittier, Covina, San Diego, Riverside, the Bradbury Ranch, Palos Verdes, the Tri-City site (Alhambra,
Pasadena, South Pasadena), Dark Canyon, Fullerton, and Owensmouth. On February 1, 1925 four of the seventeen sites presented
were recommended by the committee for further consideration. These sites were the Beverly site (the current Westwood location),
the Burbank site, the Fullerton site, and the Palos Verdes site. On March 21, 1925 the Board of Regents voted to select the
Beverly site for the permanent campus of the University of California, Los Angeles.
The Committee on Sites for the Southern Branch is also known as the Citizens Committee on Sites and the Committee of 17.
