Immediate Source of Acquisition
The manuscript of Beyond the Hundredth Meridian, correspondence regarding Stegner's research on John W. Powell, and the manuscripts
of Women on the Wall and Sabrina were received from Wallace Stegner in 1961. In August 1963 Stegner delivered photocopies
of diaries used in his research for The Mormon Trail. Except for those of Jacob Norton and John Bond, these diaries are unpublished
and were obtained from Brigham Young University or the Utah State Historical Society. In December of 1964 the Powell Report
manuscript was received, also from Stegner.
Biographical / Historical
Wallace Earle Stegner was born February 18, 1909 in Lake Mills, Iowa. Stegner was an American historian, novelist, short story

a master's degree in 1932 and a doctorate in 1935. Stegner taught at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. Eventually
he settled at Stanford University, where he founded the creative writing program. Stegner served as a special ssistant to
the Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall and also on the board of directors of the Sierra Club. He also helped create the
Committee for Green Foothills, an environmental organization to preserve the ecosystems of the San Francicsco Peninsula. Stegner
died on April 13, 1993 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
