Brief History

A project under the sponsorship of the WPA Writers' Program of the Work Projects Administration in Northern California, the individual volumes were edited for publication by Cornel Lengyel. Seven volumes were in fact published, but the project ceased with the outbreak of World War II.

Scope and Content

Collection of archival materials pertaining to the published and unpublished volumes in the series.

Remarks:

It appears that a number of the small essays among items 9-25 were destined for an unpublished handbook entitled A History of Music in San Francisco. These essays date from the earliest years of the Project, 1936-38, and do not appear in any of the later published volumes. Most were written by C. Barnett and C. Wilhelmson (first names unknown). The following items were assigned chapter headings:
