SERIES 07:  MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM.

Additional Note

After expenditure of the Ford Foundaton grant, individual directors provided substantial Center support and made possible the establishment of the headquarters in Santa Barbara. To underwrite operating revenue, the Founding Members Program was instituted in 1962 under the leadership of Harold Willens, a Los Angeles Board member. Hundreds of donors made five-year pledges of annual $1,000 contributions or more. Substantial annual gifts and a bequest from Chester F. Carlson, inventor of Xerox and a member of the Board, were instrumental in ensuring a degree of financial stability for the Center for a time. The funds provided by Carlson underwrote development of the periodical publishing program, including the Center Magazine, and the related membership campaign. As a result, individual memberships grew into the largest single source of operating income. Membership reached a peak of about 100,000 by 1969, but then declined precipitously in the 1970s and 1980s.

SERIES 08:  MICROFORMATS.

Additional Note

This series contains 16mm negative microfilm. Positive viewing copies have been made and are available for researchers. Three administrative record series were filmed for the Center, and much of the material filmed for the period up to 1965 was sent by the Center to the Fund for the Republic Archives, Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library, Princeton University. Some material, mainly post-1961 files, were sent back to Santa Barbara in 1999. The returned material has not yet been processed and is not included in this guide. Where known, box numbers from the Fund for the Republic Archives checklist are indicated for related microfilm reels. Some of the filmed material not sent to Princeton was dispersed and comingled with other CSDI files, while the remainder apparently was not retained. Links between microfilmed files and original files are noted when possible. In some instances files were not well ordered when filmed and in a few cases film apparently has been spliced into inappropriate places.
