Scope and Content

These Papers, which were given to the Bancroft Library by members of the family in 1968, are fragmentary and document only a small part of his career, notably his writing activities and his diplomatic service. They include letters addressed to him; copies of a few letters written by him; MSS and clippings of some of his articles; invitations, membership cards, passports, certificates of appointment, etc.; photographs; clippings; memorabilia, etc. They are contained in one box and an oversize portfolio, which houses primarily the certificates of appointment and a few large photographs. Most of the photographs in the collection have been removed and cataloged separately, under the call numbers BANC PIC 12567-12587 - - POR.

Biographical Sketch

Francis John Dyer, California journalist, went to Washington, D.C. in 1906 as correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle, and served thereafter as representative also for the Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union, Albany Journal and Portland (Ore.) Journal. During this period he worked, also, as a free lance writer, contributing to various magazines and syndicating "Dyer's Washington Letter." In March 1915, he was appointed a U.S. consul, serving first in Swansea, Wales, and later in Tegucigalpa, Honduras; Nogales, Mexico; and Coblentz, Germany.
