[Identification of item], Juliet Dixon Renouf Papers, Sanoian Special Collections Library, California
State University, Fresno.
Juliet Dixon was born on October 19, 1894 in Bristol, Virginia. She grew up in Hanford, California, and received her bachelor
of arts degree from Pomona College. She later did some graduate study at the University of California (Berkeley) and at Pomona
College before graduating from the School of Hygiene at Wellesley College. Dixon did her student teaching in public schools
in Boston until 1919. Once her studies ended, she accepted a job at Fresno State Normal School (now California State University,
Fresno) to teach physical education and physiology. In 1922, she became Head of the Department of Physical Education for Women.
While at Fresno she staged many performances both at the college and at its Sierra Summer School at Huntington Lake.
The Juliet Dixon Renouf papers measure 2 linear inches and date from 1889, 1919 to 1922, 1950. Included in these papers are
a credential for teaching Physical education as well as a letter of recommendation written by Henry J. King in 1950. There
are also materials she used in her classes. These are mostly songbooks she used in order to stage performances with her students.
There are also photographs dated between 1919 and 1922. These photographs include not only photographs of Juliet Dixon (Renouf)
but also photographs of her students and performances both at Fresno and at the summer school at Huntington Lake.
