Acquisition Information

The W. T. Reid Papers were given to The Bancroft Library in July 1980 by Christine L. Reid. Additions were made on December 12, 1990 and in February 1991 by the estate of Christine L. Reid, via Thomas R. Stetson.

Scope and Content

William Thomas Reid was born on November 8, 1843 on a farm near Jacksonville, Illinois. After graduating from Harvard in 1868, he taught at the Newport, Rhode Island High School and the prestigious Boston Latin School before accepting a job at the Boys' High School in San Francisco, California in 1875. Elected to the presidency of the University of California in 1881, Reid served until 1885, when he retired to found the Belmont School in Belmont, California on August 5, 1885. In May 1893, Hopkins Academy merged with the Belmont School and the two schools were incorporated as Belmont School, W. T. Reid Foundation. In April 1900, the control and ownership again reverted to Mr. Reid who ran the school until August 1918, when it was sold to the Most Rev. Edward J. Hanna, D.D., Archbishop of San Francisco.

The collection consists primarily of materials related to the Belmont School, including administrative, teacher, student, and business files with some financial records. The student files include some report cards, applications, recommendations from other schools, and correspondence between Mr. Reid and parents, as well as correspondence between other teachers and parents and students. The letters provide an in-depth look at the process of receiving an education at a private boys school in California from the turn of the century through World War I. More personal papers of the immediate Reid family—William T. Reid, Julia Reid, and William T. Reid, Jr.—are also included and also often relate to Belmont. Julia Reid's Papers, for instance, include a series of correspondence from Chinese and Japanese workers at Belmont asking or thanking her for various types of help in relation to employment. William Reid's personal papers include speeches, addresses, and talks given at Belmont, Stanford, and the University of California on teaching and sports, especially concerning football in which he starred while at Harvard.

Arrangement

Administrative files contain correspondence concerning the organization of Belmont School and the various means of incorporating the school after its inception, as well as Reid's lists of rules and regulations for students, teachers, housekeepers, and other employees. This series also contains mock ups of advertisements, information on the various clubs and associations formed at Belmont, and the structure of the school publication.

SERIES 2: GENERAL CORRESPONDENCE, 1894-1923.

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

This series of correspondence is primarily concerned with community relations, both with the inhabitants of Belmont, California and with other private schools in the area. Also included are form letters sent to parents, letters requesting monetary assistance from students or parents, and letters arranging sports activities and arranging for the Sunday Speakers at Belmont. The oversize volume also includes a sampling of Belmont School's form letters.

Scope and Content Note

Arrangement

Divided into three sub-series: administrative files, individual teacher files, and class curricula. The administrative files consist of correspondence concerning recruiting teachers and is arranged chronologically; minutes of teachers meetings and information about the general duties of the teachers is also found here. The individual teacher files contain correspondence between various teachers and Mr. Reid or parents of students. Various materials relating to classes taught at Belmont, either by the Reids or other teachers, is contained in the class curricula files.

Arrangement

The bulk of the collection consists of this comprehensive collection of correspondence between William Reid and the parents of his students. Also included in the files are performance records of the students at schools prior to coming to Belmont, applications and sometimes recommendations to colleges and universities, especially Harvard, Yale, and the University of California, Berkeley. The letters cover a wide range of concerns -everything from comments on the students behavior and talents to concern about classroom performance or reasons for expulsion from Belmont.

Scope and Content Note

The bulk of this series consists of W. T. Reid's personal papers with a small amount of material relating to his wife, Julia Reid, and their son, W. T. Reid, Jr. Included is Reid's correspondence relating to his properties in Tahoe and Berkeley, some of his speeches and talks, and articles he wrote, mainly about sports, which were published in newspapers in California. Julia Reid's correspondence contains a group of letters written to her by Chinese and Japanese grounds keepers and kitchen workers at Belmont. W. T. Reid, Jr.'s scrapbook is a commonplace book compiled during his years at college.
