Abstract: The Santa Clara University Map Collection consists of 41 maps, drawings,
surveys, and site plans of Santa Clara University. The maps in the collection
range in date from 1854 to 1982, and include items prepared by public works
officials, professional architects and surveyors for University planning purposes,
engineering students for class assignments, and local historians for historical
research.

Access
Santa Clara University permits public access to its archives within the context of
respect for individual privacy, administrative confidentiality, and the integrity of the
records. It reserves the right to close all or any portion of its records to researchers.
The archival files of any office may be opened to a qualified researcher by the
administrator of that office or his/her designee at any time.
Archival collections may be used by researchers only in the Reading Room of the
University Archives at the discretion of the archivist.

History
Santa Clara University, founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus as Santa Clara College, is
California's oldest institution of higher learning. It was established on the site of the
Mission Santa Clara de Asis, the eighth of the original 21 California missions.
Scope and Content
The Santa Clara University Map Collection consists of 41 maps, drawings, surveys, and site
plans of Santa Clara University, ranging in date from 1854-1982. They include color landscape
drawings, University master plans, area maps of campus buildings, and early plot maps of Santa
Clara College. The maps in the collection were prepared by public works officers, engineering
students for class assignments, professional architects and surveyors for University planning
purposes, and historians for historical research. This collection of maps visually represents the
changing spaces of the University campus over time, from its founding in 1851 as Santa Clara
College, to the present day, as Santa Clara University.
The Santa Clara University Map Collection is an artificial collection created by the
University Archives. The items in the collection were acquired from various sources, including
faculty, alumni, University departments, and private donors.
