Scope and Contents
A collection of 152 printed maps of Paris and its environs, dating from 1754 to 1907. Most are hand-colored, indexed, and
many are illustrated
with vignettes of famed monuments. Various innovative cartographic techniques are utilized, including the "méthode Zugenbuhler,"
the "système
Acklin," and the "procédé de géomontographie Bauerkeller," a bas-relief process. Most are mounted on canvas to facilitate
folding, and many are
in original folders and/or slipcases.
The collection covers the period during which Paris was transformed from a largely medieval city into a modern metropolis
under Napoléon
Bonaparte and Napoléon III, reflecting the division of the city into 12 arrondissements, and the building of the rail system
and train stations.
Most prominent are the changes instigated by Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann (1809-1891) for Napoléon III during the 1850s
and 60s, including the
cutting of wide, straight, arterial thoroughfares; the renovation and expansion of the system of bridges across the Seine;
the creation of the
modern water and sewer systems; the demolition and rebuilding of the Île de la Cité into an administrative and religious center;
and the
annexation of the suburbs, resulting in a total of 20 arrondissements. The map from 1873 indicates buildings and monuments
destroyed during the
Paris Commune. Included also are guides with maps for the Expositions nationales of 1844 and 1849, and Exposition universelle
of 1889.
Unless otherwise specified (i.e. "paper only"), all maps are mounted on canvas.

Nouveau Plan de Paris à l'usage des promeneurs : d'après la méthode Zugenbuhler, auteur d'un atlas universel
Creator: Logerot, Auguste, 1804-1876 (publisher)
Physical Description: 1 map: lithograph, hand coloring ; 42.5 x 59
cm
Scope and Contents note
Vallée lists editions in 1855 and 1857, but not that of 1858 (L. Vallée. Catalogue des plans de Paris, 1933-1934). Plan ruled
in 138
numbered squares, alternatively colored pale blue in a checkboard pattern and indexed to the alphabetical list of streets.
Important
buildings etc. shown pictorially at their site on plan. Dissected in 18 pieces and mounted on toile. Scale approximately 1:15,000.
Getty
copy closely trimmed with loss of outer border at top and sides and loss of printer's name at bottom. This makes identification
of
edition uncertain. The "Supplément" to the street index contains two names more than that for the edition of 1857; see University
of
Chicago Library web site (www.lib.uchicago.edu/e/collections/maps/paris). This suggests that the present map is likely to
be 1858.

Creator: Lith. Gover (printer)
Creator: Vigneau & Pasquier (binders)
Physical Description: 1 plan: lithograph, hand coloring ; sheet 60
x 80, folded in cover to 16 x 11 cm + 1 letterpress street index (78 p. ; 15 cm)
Scope and Contents note
Cover title. Undated. Conjectural publication date 1865 written in pencil on verso of plan and on p. [1] of street index.
Plan is ruled
into four quarters, each composed of 16 numbered rectangles, to which the separately printed "Nomenclature alphabétique des
rues de
Paris" is indexed. Each rectangle is subdivided into 5 areas, the central panel of which is color coded for the quarter in
which it is
located. Thus the location of each street is given as a letter for the quarter's color, a number for the rectangle, and a
second letter
for the sub-area of the rectangle. Folded plan was originally attached to cover of green textured cloth, stamped in blind
and gilt.
Binders identified as Vigneau & Pasquier on p. [4] of cover. Street index sewn to p. [2] of cover. Scale not given. In Getty
copy
plan detached from cover. Following the street index are stapled 8 leaves of blank ruled paper, apparently intended for notes;
the first
leaf bears names and addresses in Paris, now lined out. Front pastedown in Getty copy is publisher's list of Guides pratiques
Conty.
Back pastedown is advertisement for Mauger & Fils & Letu, manufacturers of porcelaine and ceramics. On back pastedown is
bookplate of Georges Mermilliod, avoué à la Cour d'appel. On verso of plan and on p. [1] of street index is an owner's stamp
in blue
ink, consisting of a deer between two palm fronds, surmounted by a marquis's coronet (not in Lugt). Written within both stamped
impressions is the number 409, and beside the impression on plan verso are several inscriptions, including: Desault / Le Mans
(Sarthe).
