Acquisition Information

The Lois Lenski Papers were transferred to The Bancroft Library from the Ed Psych Library, University of California, Berkeley on December 12, 1973, with additional material received on June 28, 1978.

Scope and Content

Lois Lenski (Mrs. Arthur S. Covey), artist and author, was born in Springfield, Ohio, October 14, 1893. She graduated from Ohio State University, College of Education in 1915 and studied art at the Art Students' League in New York City and later at Westminster School of Art in London, England. Lenski is best known as the author and illustrator of juvenile books. She won the Newberry Medal in 1946 for Strawberry Girl, one of a popular series of American Regional Books written for children grades 5 to 7. She received the Child Study Association Award in 1948 for Judy's Journey, the Children's Book Collection medallion from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1969. Lenski died in 1974.
This collection consists of manuscripts of Lois Lenski's writings for children, including galleys and original illustrations, along with background material and some fan letters from children and teachers. Included also are articles by and about Lenski and a small number of book marks, jackets, and plates designed by Lenski.
