BANC PIC 1973.055:098--PIC Oakland Long Wharf, San Francisco Bay terminal of the Central Pacific, now Southern Pacific, from a sketch appearing in Leslie's Weekly, May 11, 1878... [Photographic reproduction of print.] (Southern Pacific photo X-1165.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:099--PIC San Francisco -- For millions of visitors, their first glimpse of the city came from the deck of a Southern Pacific ferryboat. And the cross-bay trip was a high spot in life for more than one generation of youngsters. (Southern Pacific photo N-4074-2.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:100--PIC And this is now [i.e. how?] it ended -- A lonely few passengers are lost in the corridor of a Southern Pacific ferry, making a recent trip across the bay. (Southern Pacific Photo N-3046-17.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:101--PIC Full Ahead -- For years the ferryboats have been plying back and forth across the San Francisco Bay. Here is the Bay as seen from the pilot house of a ferryboat --Yerba Buena Island, the San Francisco skyline and in the forefront, the bridge, that in 1939 ordained the coming end of ferry service on the Bay. (Southern Pacific Photo B-105-3.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:102--PIC One of the last two survivors of the once-great ferry fleet was the steamer Berkeley. Built in 1901, as one of the first propellor-driven ferries, she was rebuilt in 1918, and has spent her last days moving train passengers from San Francisco to Oakland Pier. (Southern Pacific photo N-3046-18.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:103--PIC Queen of the Bay -- In her time, the Eureka was the floating palace of the bay fleet, largest of all the passenger ferries. At the Maritime Museum, she'll be a fitting memorial for the age of ferryboats. (Southern Pacific Photo N-5164-4.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:104--PIC Decks of the ferryboats once swarmed with commuters and train passengers as the busy boats shuttled across the Bay. With the opening of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in 1939, scenes such as this -- with the upper and lower decks of the Alameda crowded to the rails -- became only a memory as the commuters took to the bridge trains and the passenger decks of the boats became almost empty. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Pacific Photo N-499.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:105--PIC The Inevitable -- The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge stretches above the Berkeley, and one of her auto-carrying sisters. It was the bridge, newly completed when this photo was taken, that forecast the end of the ferryboat. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Pacific Photo X-1348-1.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:106--PIC Auto toll, 1927 style -- Long lines of automobiles lined up at the toll station on Oakland Pier in 1927, waiting to board the waiting auto ferries. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Pacific Photo N-168-4.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:107--PIC Broadway Wharf in San Francisco during 1865. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Paicfic Photo X-509.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:108--PIC This was the beginnig -- Central Pacific ferryboats in 1875 began carrying passengers between this "commodious and convenient passenger station" and the Oakland long wharf. It continued as the base of ferry operations until construction of the present Ferry Building in 1896. This view was taken in 1886. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Pacific Photo X-915.)
BANC PIC 1973.055:109--PIC Before the bridge, ferryboats waddled across the bay in all directions, hauling commuters between San Francisco, the East Bay and Marin County shores and connecting with local and transcontinental trains at Oakland Pier. This photo was taken in 1926, long before the construction of Treasure Island and the exposition buildings for the World's Fair. Later, after the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge was opened, the Key System's orange ferries hauled passengers to the Fair -- and during World War II, part of the fleet was busy carrying servicemen between Fort Mason and Camp Stoneman. [Copy photograph.] (Southern Pacific Photo X-1656.)
