Background
- Scope and content:
-
The first three groupings in this collection are copies made in the old Secretaría de Guerra y Marina in the first quarter of this century. Many were copied by Charles H. Cunningham, George R. Tays, and Rufus K. Wyllys for their own studies. Most were listed by Herbert E. Bolton in his Guide to the Materials for United States History in the Archives of Mexico. Although the archive has been reorganized since that time, the transcripts have been left in the groupings in which they were copied. It was impossible to ascertain how the modern groupings correlate to the older ones. The headings which correspond to the older groupings are "Archivo General", "Archivo General -Fracción Primera (Operaciones Militares)", and "Archivo de la Bibiotheca -Varios Asuntos". They occupy the first nine pages of this Calendar. The folders are annotated with the name of the person for whom they were copied.
The fourth grouping represents copies taken from the microfilm made for Bancroft Library in 1955 under the direction of Professor George P. Hammond. Some are typed transcripts made by Paul Ezell from the microfilm, and some are bound volumes of copyflo. They are listed in this Calendar under the title "Expediente XI/481.3", which is the designation, followed by a document number, by which whey are now known. They are listed in the Guía del Archivo Histórico Militar de México, published by the Mexican Dirección de Archivo Militar. (BL call number CD3660 M35).
Folder numbers should be used in requesting these documents, as well as the archival citations.
Lists of documents copied from this archive and others in Mexico by Tays and Wyllys may be found in Bancroft Library (see BL Author-Title Catalog under the authors' names).
