ABSTRACT

Papers of the poet Gael Turnbull, containing correspondence, manuscripts of poems, translations, and ephemera. The correspondence consists of letters written to the poet and editor Cid Corman during the period 1965-1982. The collection also includes typescripts of the poem "Iliados A," a typescript of the essay "On translating Homer or Anyone Else," a printed broadside of the poem "Aurora," a program for a production of "The Real McCoy," and manuscripts and printed editions of the poem "Seven from Stifford's Bridge."

BIOGRAPHY

Gael Lundin Turnbull was born on April 7, 1928, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He received a B.A. from Cambridge University (1948) and an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (1951). In addition to his career as a physician and anesthesiologist, he is also an accomplished poet and has published over twenty volumes of poetry.

The Gael Turnbull Papers are arranged in two series: 1) LETTERS TO CID CORMAN and 2) MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS.
SERIES 1: LETTERS TO CID CORMAN
The LETTERS TO CID CORMAN series dates from 1966 to 1982 and contains over sixty letters from Turnbull. Topics of discussion include poetry, Turnbull's hospital duties, his family life, and their mutual friends, including Basil Bunting, who was a strong influence on Turnbull. The letters are arranged chronologically.
SERIES 2: MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
The series includes typescripts of the poem "Iliados A," a typescript of the essay "On translating Homer or Anyone Else," a printed broadside of the poem "Aurora," a program for a production of "The Real McCoy," and manuscripts and printed editions of the poem "Seven from Stifford's Bridge." The materials are arranged alphabetically.
