Biographical/Historical Note
Julia Margaret Cameron was an English photographer whose work dated from 1864 to the 1870s; she was known especially for her
portraits. Born and raised in India, she continued to live in Calcutta after her marriage in 1838 to the jurist Charles Hay
Cameron; from 1846-1875 they lived in England, and then in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) until their deaths. Their son, Hardinge Hay
Cameron, was private secrtary to Sir William Gregory, governor of Ceylon from 1872-77. He married Catherine Macintosh Macleod
(known as Kitty) in 1879 or 1880, and later married Adeline Blake, daughter of George Pilkington Blake. Another son, Henry
Herschel Hay Cameron, was also a photographer.

Scope and Content of Collection
The collection consists primarily of correspondence and personal papers, with some family photographs, and original watercolors
and drawings. The material derives from the estate of Hardinge Hay Cameron, and the bulk of it concerns Hardinge Hay Cameron,
his wives, and their families. The papers provide a glimpse of Julia Margaret Cameron's intellectual and artistic milieu,
document her relationships with her husband and children, and present a view of late 19th and early 20th century British colonial
life in Ceylon.

Scope and Content Note
Correspondence, documents, reports, manuscripts, and other family materials.
Letters sent to and received by Charles Hay and Julia Margaret Cameron include those sent by Charles to Julia discussing his
1850 trip to Ceylon (1850-1851) as well as a group sent by Julia to Hardinge Hay Cameron in which she expresses her worries
for her son Charles Hay, and discusses her religious feelings, her grandchildren, the estates in Ceylon, and the family's
financial situation (1871-1876). Other writings by Julia Margaret Cameron include a prayer written before the birth of her
first child (1838) and an incomplete MS titled "Reminiscences" (1876). Sir John Herschel writes to Julia Margaret Cameron
about his experiments with photography and sends samples of new chemical processes (1839), his wife Lady Margaret Herschel
writes of Henry Fox Talbot's invention of the calotype (1841), and their daughter Caroline sends 5 sheets of leaf impressions
(1841-1842).
Remaining papers relate to other family members, principally Hardinge Hay Cameron and his wives Kitty Macleod Cameron and
Adeline A. Blake Cameron, together with their families. They write of the Camerons' coffee plantations in Ceylon, personal
affairs, and health; Henry Herschel Hay Cameron writes of photography and the death in Ceylon of Ellen Ottingham, Julia Margaret
Cameron's maid and photographic assistant. In addition to the extensive correspondence between family members, the papers
include other personal and business letters, family legal documents (such as wills and marriage settlements), financial documents
and reports from the estates in Ceylon, household records, and journals. Sir Henry Taylor sends the poems "Ernesto" and "Lago
Lugano," an untitled short poem, and a drama about Thomas à Becket.
