Biography

Elizabeth Morrison Boynton Harbert, a feminist, suffragist, author and lecturer, was active from an early age in support of the rights of women to vote and to obtain a higher education. She served for twelve years as president of the Illinois Woman Suffrage Association, corresponded extensively with other prominent feminist leaders, wrote pamphlets and books, and was active in numerous women's, political, religious and philanthropic organizations. In 1870 she married lawyer William Soesbe Harbert. They had three children: Arthur Boynton (d.1900), Corinne Boynton, and Elizabeth Harbert Rowe. The Harberts relocated to Pasadena, California later in their lives and Elizabeth died there in 1925.

Chiefly correspondence, the collection also contains manuscripts (including diaries, address books of woman suffrage workers, poetry and music), printed matter and ephemera, large scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, some photographs, and an extensive collection of pamphlets and broadsides on the topic of woman suffrage.
Subject matter represented in the collection includes the woman suffrage movement (particularly in Iowa, Illinois, and California), and related organizations (including the Illinois Equal Suffrage Association); religious and philanthropic organizations (including the Women's Christian Temperance Union); editorial and journalistic activities of Elizabeth Boynton Harbert; and Harbert family matters.
