Administrative Information

Acquisition Information

The Ulrich Leo Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Mrs. Helene Leo on November 14, 1974.

Biography

Ulrich Leo was born in Germany on May 8, 1890. The son of the great Latinist, Friedrich Leo, Ulrich studied the Classical languages, philology, and hermeneutics at Goettingen and Greifswald. After completing his studies in Germany he taught briefly at William Penn College in Iowa before going to the University of Toronto as professor of Romance literature. His specialty was the literature of Italy. He published works on Dante, Pirandello, Tasso, Rutebeuf, Romulo Gallegos, and Fogazzaro, as well as studies in philology and style.

Scope and Content

The Ulrich Leo papers contain correspondence and papers relating primarily to his career as a professor of Romance literature, mainly at the University of Toronto. Although his scholarly interests were wide, Leo's particular field was the literature of Italy: the collection includes manuscripts and revisions of Leo's works on Dante and Pirandello. Leo published several works on Tasso, Rutebeuf, Romulo Gallegos, and Fogazzaro, as well as studies in philology and style. Also contained in the collection are manuscripts, reprints of his writings, galleys, Leo's notes in Italian, French, Middle Latin, and Provencal, book reviews, and short biographical articles on his contemporary peers. Many of the articles, manuscripts, and other materials are in written German, with some in Italian, Spanish, or French.
