This collection is comprised of six early-20th-century albums of uncertain provenance
containing photographic prints, postcards, and photomechanical reproductions that document
the vacation experiences of the creators of each of the albums. Locales depicted are chiefly
in Southern California, but also include areas throughout the rest of California and the
Western states and, in a few cases, in the Eastern United States. The images document the
California landscape and its native flora and fauna as they appeared during the first
decades of the 20th century. Subjects depicted include missions, national parks, city street
scenes, domestic scenes, historic buildings, deserts, beaches, mountains, and lakes.

Album Scope and Content Summary
One photograph album measuring 32 x 26 cm and depicting Yosemite and Lake County,
California. It consists of 193 black-and-white photographs (silver gelatin) of various
sizes mounted on black paper. Pages 35-36 are blank as are page 57 and following. The
photographs do not have dates or captions, but "1908" is written in pencil on the first
page. The photographs focus on four women who were part of a larger touring party. In
addition to landscape shots, the photographs feature the touring party posing in front
of scenic backdrops and engaged in various leisure activities.
142 photographs are of Yosemite, including 27 panoramic shots. Photographs of Yosemite
include shots of Half Dome, El Capitan, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Falls, the Sentinel
Hotel, and the Camp Lost Arrow campground and office. Photographs also include 4 shots
of "Indian Lucy" Brown, one of the original Yosemite Native Americans found in the
valley at the time of its first exploration by white men in 1851. Indian Lucy was said
to have been nearly 120 years old at the time of her death (circa 1920) and is buried in
Yosemite Cemetery.
52 photographs are of Lake County, California, featuring the Seigler Springs resort
area, surrounding lakes, rivers, waterfalls, and "The Geysers," an active geothermal

black paper. The album depicts family and school outings to beach and mountain
destinations in Southern California. Locales include the San Bernardino Mountains, Big

some photographs and identifies herself as "me" in the captions. Female
chaperones/teachers present in photographs of the Glendora Foothill School outing appear
in other photographs throughout the album, implying that the creator of the album may
have been a coworker of these teachers. Persons identified by name in the photographs
include Mr. and Mrs. Jacobsmeyer and baby, Mrs. Johnson and baby, Lillian Lewis, Mrs.
Sutherland, Miss Weatherby, Mr. Dunn, Miss Wybro, and Ethel Lunn.

Album Scope and Content Summary
One photograph album measuring 28.5 x 18.5 cm and containing black-and-white
photographs mounted on black paper. Each photograph has a caption, and infrequently a
date, written on the lower border. The provenance of the album is unknown, though it is
clear from one caption that the album's creator lived in Claremont, California. The
album may possibly have belonged to a member of the Duvall or Hart families, who are
identified by these surnames in the caption of one photograph.
Photographs in the album appear to document travels of the creator and family members
around Southern California in the early 1920s. Southern California locales pictured
include Claremont; Pasadena; the San Gabriel, San Fernando, and San Juan Capistrano
missions; Camulos Rancho; the California desert; Riverside, Catalina Island, Laguna
Beach, and San Diego. In addition, there are photographs of a camping trip into San
Antonio Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Album Scope and Content Summary
One album of vacation photographs and postcards depicting locations throughout
California from 1922 and 1924. Measuring 28.5 x 18 cm, the album contains more than 250
black-and-white photographs, postcards, and photogravures mounted on black paper. Each
item is labeled with its location, subject(s), and in some instances, the month and year
it was taken. Southern California locales include Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Pasadena,
Riverside, Fullerton, Laguna Beach, San Juan Capistrano, and Catalina Island. Northern
California locales include Monterey, the San Francisco Bay area, and Stanford
University. Outdoor recreation areas such as the California Redwood Park, Big Basin
State Park, the Muir Woods, Camp Baldy, and Arrowhead Lake are also featured. Although
the majority of the photographs depict places in California, the album also contains
views of Crater Lake, Oregon; Glacier National Park, Montana; and a 1922 horseback
excursion to Arizona's Grand Canyon. Many of the images of Oregon's Crater Lake and the
redwood parks are postcards, both in color and black and white.
Although the provenance and the photographer of the album are unknown, it is possible
that both are connected with a man and woman who appear in many of the photographs and
are identified in the captions as D.M. Carroll and Jean Miller Carroll, respectively.
The album's provenance also could be connected to a woman identified in the captions as
Mrs. Florence Sands Murray, whose Alhambra, California home appears in the album.
The leather-bound album includes, in addition to the photographs and postcards
mentioned above, one small tintype depicting an image similar to a San Gabriel Mission
photograph in the album. A large photograph of the San Juan Capistrano mission and one
of Camp Baldy are both hand tinted.
