Scope and Content
This collection of records and papers, pertaining to various units and personnel of the California State and National Guard,
has been assembled from a number of sources. The material has been grouped largely by provenance but items may later be added
to the various groups or new groups added as required.
Part I - Material relating to General J. A. Sutter's command.
Scope and Content Note
This consists of a notebook kept by Wake Bryarly and Richard H. Sinton, 1852-1855, with lists of staff and copies of orders
issued, and a group of letters received by Sinton, 1855-1857, from Sutter, Hall McAllister and A. Andrews (Aid-de-camp). (Possibly
from the Cowan Collection.)

Scope and Content Note
Included is copy of a letter from General James H. Carleton to Senator John Conness, 1864, concerning arrest of Sylvester
Mowry and Carleton's defense of his action. With the photocopy are miscellaneous notes by Scammell and a letter he received
giving information concerning Edwin A. Rigg. (Gifts of Colonel Scammell, 1949-1951.)
Part IV - Returns and accounts (26 items) Sept.-Dec., 1865, for units of 2d Regiment, California Cavalry, stationed at Fort Bidwell, Calif.
Additional Note
These are Quartermaster's records signed mainly by 2d Lieutenant H. G. Wilder; a few signed by Captain Aug. W. Starr, commanding.
There is also a list of stores transferred to Fort Crook. (Purchased from J. Swingle, Aug. 1961.)
