Scope and Content
The Len Evans Papers, as received by GLHS, was basically unstructured in content. Much of the material consisted of news clippings
mainly from mainstream and gay media (i.e.
The Advocate,
One,
Mother Jones,
Los Angeles Times, etc.). These clippings were discarded because the bulk of the articles can be retrieved from the current GLHS periodical holdings
or the public library.
The remainder of the collection has been arranged alphabetically by subject. There is also a separate Gay History Questionnaire
File which was part of Len Evans' attempt to gather information on the gay lifestyles of older gay men from the 1920's to
date [early 1970's]. Related to this survey is the subsequent Manuscript File. Please consult the file list for subject titles
and the manuscripts Evans' collected.
There are 8 oral history interview tapes (Oral History Project #'s 00-01 to 00-08) that Evans conducted in 1983 (one tape
was conducted by Allan Bérubé). The tapes are of concern lesbian and gay describing life in the 1950's especially how it related
to Senator Joseph McCarthy's anti- communist witch hunts.
