1941. The majority of the bonds were sold in February 1940. Some of the
receipts are numbered and some are not. The lowest number to be seen is 836000,
while the highest is 836509. The bond receipts are arranged chronologically
with the most recent placed on top.
Background
The California Toll Bridge Authority operates the five bridges that
cross San Francisco Bay. This receipt book was maintained by the Bridge
Authority's Revenue Department to record purchases of bridge investment
bonds.Large investors include the American Trust Company in San Francisco, The
First Cleveland Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio, the National Metropolitan Bank
of Washington, D.C., the Chase National Bank of New York, Dean Witter & Co.
of San Francisco, and Wells Fargo Bank & Union Trust Co. There are also
receipts made out to various other banks, companies, and individuals. The
amount of the bonds ranges from $1000 to $1,000,000.
