Dr. Heyneman was born in San Francisco, CA February 18, 1925, and educated at Harvard University (AB 1950) and Rice Institute
(MA 1952, PhD 1954). He was an assistant in biology at Rice (1952-54), asst. professor zoology, UCLA (1954-59), head Dept.
Parasitology, US Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU), Cairo (1960-62).
He joined the staff of the Hooper Foundation in 1962, and was successively research parasitologist (1962-77), professor of
parasitology (1968-91), assistant director (1970-77), acting chairman of the Dept. of Epidemiology & International Health
(1975-78). 1970-91 Dr. Heyneman was Co-director of the Tropical Diseases Laboratory, Had of the Parasitology Division of the
Dept. of Epidemiology. Resident Coordinator of the International Center for Medical Research & Training, Inst. of Medical
Research, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (1964-66). Consultant-rapporteur of WHO Traveling Seminar on Leishmaniasis to USSR (1967),and
US Navy Medical Research Unit 3, in Cairo, Egypt, 1967-. He was Director of the UCB/UCSF Joint Medical Program, and associate
dean of the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley. He held these appointments until becoming emeritus professor in 1991.
A member of many professional societies, he was president of the American Society of Parasitology (1982-83). His research
interests included parasite immunology and host-parasite studies; epidemiology, disease impact of development in the Third
World.
Includes transcripts of travel notes (to NAMRU, Cairo and Ethiopia, 1981), minutes of laboratory meetings at the Institute
for Medical Research, Kuala Lumpur. Received 3/20/91.
