Biography

Arnold Edward Joyal was born on October 13, 1902, in Quebec, Canada. At the University of California, Berkeley, Joyal received a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. Joyal remained in the field of education throughout his professional life and began his career in 1926 as a teacher and later as the principal of Union High School in Wheatland, California. He taught at many schools and universities and led as the Dean of the College of Education at the University of Oklahoma between 1945 and 1948 and the third President of Fresno State College (now California State University, Fresno) between 1948 and 1964.
Joyal also served as a specialist in school finance with the United States Office of Education in Washington D.C. from 1931 to 1933. He remained actively interested in this area and was made chairman of the National Education Association (NEA) Committee of Tax Education and School Finance. He also wrote widely in the field of education and contributed numerous articles to educational journals. Arnold Joyal died on May 28, 1999.

Scope and Content

The Arnold Joyal papers measure 1.5 linear foot and date from 1940 to 1996. The papers predominantly cover Joyal's professional life and are arranged into two series: Personal and Professional.
The Personal series (1923, 1945-1995) contains various profiles of Joyal's personal and professional achievements. Starting in 1950, Arnold Joyal and his wife began to send newsletters to family and friends at the start of each new year in place of Christmas cards. The letters contain brief outlines of various important events of the Joyal family over the previous year. There is a photograph of Joyal's seventy-year reunion at the University of California at Berkeley in 1995 and a certificate to celebrate the event and also a photograph of Joyal at a conference in 1923 while still a student at Berkeley. Joyal was also a member of The Academy, a society where prominent Fresnans met once a month to discuss contemporary issues. There are two of Joyal's topical papers which he read at those meetings.
The Professional series (1940-1988) contains appointment diaries which Joyal kept over the course of thirty years documenting his day-to-day personal and professional activities. This section predominantly covers the time period when Joyal was president of Fresno State College. The newspaper clippings as well as the speeches and reports all describe events and achievements at Fresno State College during his presidency.
Throughout his professional career Joyal published articles which dealt with education and increasing federal support for schools. He also wrote reports and gave speeches on these issues while at the University of Oklahoma. In 1971 Joyal was invited by the Board of Trustees at Golden Gate College to write a report on the organization and management of the College as an objective outsider. In addition, there are miscellaneous writings on democracy, individuality and the social sciences. His interest was not restricted to education in the United States. He also went on study tours to observe the educational standards and techniques of other countries.
