Background
Arnold Edward Joyal was born on October 13, 1902, in Quebec, Canada. At the University of
California, Berkeley, Joyal received a B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. Joyal remained in the field
of education throughout his professional life and began his career in 1926 as a teacher
and later as the principal of Union High School in Wheatland, California. He taught at
many schools and universities and led as the Dean of the College of Education at the
University of Oklahoma between 1945 and 1948 and the third President of Fresno State
College (now California State University, Fresno) between 1948 and 1964.
