Abstract: John Edward Goodwin (1876-1948) was head of stacks and loans at Stanford University Library and a librarian at the University
of Texas before becoming a librarian at the University of California Southern Branch (later UCLA) in 1923. The collection
consists of correspondence, articles, photographs, clippings, notes, memorabilia, and printed material related to Goodwin's
career as a librarian.

Biography
Goodwin was born in 1876; attended University of Wisconsin and New York State Library School, Albany; became head of stacks
and loans at Stanford University Library; Librarian, University of Texas; became Librarian, University of California Southern
Branch (later UCLA) in 1923; in 1923, the UCLA library had a staff of twelve and a collection of 42,000 volumes; by his retirement
in 1944, UCLA's collection had increased to 52 staff members and 462,000 volumes; died in 1948.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, articles, photographs, clippings, notes, memorabilia, and printed material related
to Goodwin's career as a librarian. Includes material concerning his activities as a student at the University of Wisconsin
and at the New York State Library School, Albany. Contains material related to his professional career, as head of stacks
and loans at Stanford University Library, Librarian of the University of Texas and as Librarian of UCLA. Also contains research
materials about Goodwin assembled by Linda L. West.
