Processing

These records were appraised, arranged, and described in 2000 by Lori Ann Lindberg.

History

California Design was a triennial exhibition of the decorative arts and crafts, active during the years 1955 to 1984. Originally an annual exhibition of the Pasadena Art Museum, the exhibition grew over time to such a size and scope that by 1961 an annual exhibition was impossible to stage. In 1962, the exhibition became a triennial survey of the best in California crafts and design. Eudorah M. Moore was the director of the exhibition from 1962 to 1978. Under her direction, California Design became an exhibition of national and international acclaim. Incorporated as a tax-exempt department of the Pasadena Art Museum in 1967, California Design was able to successfully survive on its own after the closing of the Pasadena Art Museum in 1974. It continued its mission of exhibiting the best work of California's designers and craftsmen for another ten years before ceasing operations in 1984.

Scope and Content

The records of California Design cover the years 1955 to 1984. The largest group of records covers the triennial exhibitions California Design 8 through California Design 76, with additional records of interim exhibitions, administrative and personal records, photographs, filmstrips, audio tapes, audiocassettes, video tape, and slides. Records of the first six exhibitions are the least represented, with not much extant beyond the exhibition catalogs and a few photographs. Some records, particularly large groups of slides, were lost to water damage after a flood in their South Pasadena storage space. Many others show some evidence of moisture exposure but are in good condition. The records are remarkably rich in photographic evidence of objects exhibited in the California Design exhibitions. The collection is a significant record of an especially creative and colorful period of craft activity in California. Records after 1972 are inconsistent, with income tax returns missing and little evidence of the dissolution of the corporation. Grant applications prior to 1973 are not in the collection and are assumed to be with the records of the Pasadena Art Museum at the Norton Simon Museum of Art, Pasadena, CA.

Arrangement

The subgroups in this collection are arranged chronologically by exhibition, based on the original order imposed by the creator of the collection. Additional subgroups of interim exhibition files (arranged chronologically), personal papers, index cardfiles (arranged alphabetically), exhibition slides, audio materials, and oversize photographs were created during processing and included at the end of the exhibition subgroups. These subgroups include important items that were not an apparent part of the original order when the collection was acquired.

Organization

The California Design Archives were arranged into subgroups during the processing of the collection. The subgroups and series represent the groupings of the files created by California Design, unless noted otherwise. The subgroups are:

Physical Description: 0.25 linear feet (1 box)

Scope and Content Note

The first six exhibitions of California Design were held annually at the Pasadena Art Museum from 1955-1960, funded by grants from the County of Los Angeles. The shows featured contemporary design of home furnishings, accessories, and equipment from Southern California designers, manufacturers, and retailers. The documents in this subgroup include exhibition catalogs, copies of the annual contract with Los Angeles County, insurance valuations, photographs and transparencies documenting some of the items in the exhibitions, and press releases.
Also included are items related to two exhibitions with similar themes that were organized by other California museums during the same period. "California Designed" (1955) was produced jointly by the Long Beach Municipal Art Museum and the M.H. de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco. Another show, "Contemporary California Designers," was held at the Oakland Exposition Building in 1955.
Items in this subgroup are arranged alphabetically by type of record.

Physical Description: 0.5 linear feet (2 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Several changes occurred with the planning of California Design 8. First, Mrs. Anson C. (Eudorah) Moore assumed the mantle of director of California Design and continued in this role until 1984. Second, the exhibition was now held every three years rather than annually. This exhibition also marked the inauguration of a juried selection system and an expanded scope that included both industrial design and handcrafted works by California designers. This subgroup contains correspondence, the exhibition catalog, the contract with Los Angeles County, exhibition ephemera, photographs and transparencies of the exhibition, and press releases and news clippings.
Items in this subgroup are arranged alphabetically by type of record. Photographs were moved out of alphabetical sequence to the back of the subgroup in order to maintain paper records together as much as possible.

Scope and Content Note

With California Design 9, the scope of the exhibition was expanded further to include designers from throughout California. The Oakland Museum participated in an advisory capacity and assisted with organizing the exhibition by setting up a depot for entries by Northern California designers. California Design 9 followed the same format as the previous year: items were selected by jury with the exhibition split evenly between industrial and handcrafted design. The records in this subgroup include an exhibition catalog, correspondence, exhibition ephemera, news clippings, and a sizeable collection of photographs of the exhibition.
Items in this subgroup are arranged alphabetically by type of record. Photographs were moved out of alphabetical sequence to the back of the subgroup in order to maintain paper records together as much as possible.

California Design 10, 1968

Physical Description: 1 linear foot (4 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Like its most recent predecessors, California Design 10 was a triennial survey of the best of California design, and the exhibition was evenly divided between hand-made crafts and manufactured objects. After the exhibition closed at the Pasadena Art Museum in May 1968, it was moved in its entirety and became the opening exhibit of the new California Exposition in Sacramento (July 1-September 17, 1968). This subgroup contains correspondence, general administrative material, insurance contracts, press releases and news clippings, files related to the show at the California Exposition, and copies of the exhibition catalog and catalog for a series of filmstrips of the exhibition. There is also correspondence between Mrs. Moore and members of the U.S. Committee for Participation in the Triennale exploring the possibility of California Design exhibiting in Milan, Italy. Finally, there is a sizeable collection of black-and-white photographs documenting the exhibition.
Items in this subgroup are arranged alphabetically by type of record except for photographs, which have been moved out of alphabetical sequence to the back of the subgroup.

Physical Description: 0.25 linear feet (1 box)

Scope and Content Note

Subtitled, "Traditional objects from Appalachia and the Valley of the Rio Grande, New Mexico," this exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum was a departure for the staff involved with California Design. The exhibition combined objects on loan from private collectors and crafts designers with events that attempted to "relate to all aspects of the life of the two areas covered." This subgroup contains correspondence, ephemera, exhibition catalog and narrative, press releases and news clippings, research material, and a folder of materials related to one event.
Items in this subgroup are arranged alphabetically by type of record.

Physical Description: 1.25 linear feet (5 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

By the time of this "Bicentennial Celebration," California Design had become a non-profit corporation independent of the Pasadena Art Museum, which had "changed hands and direction" after 1974. The exhibition was held at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles, and once again was divided equally between individually crafted and industrially manufactured objects. While California Design continued as an organization for another eight years, California Design 76 was the last major exhibition to be produced. The subgroup contains correspondence, docent program material, exhibition catalog and ephemera, insurance contracts, and publicity. Also included is a large collection of photographs documenting the exhibition.

Interim Exhibitions, 1964-1984

Physical Description: 0.5 linear feet (2 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

This subgroup contains the records of interim exhibitions, smaller exhibitions that took place between the major triennial California Design series of exhibitions. In this subgroup are the records of the solo exhibition of Abakanowicz, the prominent Polish fiber artist, as well as the innovative "Fiber As Medium" Festival in 1971. A record of California Design's long-time collaboration with The Broadway department store is also well documented here.
Arranged chronologically by exhibition. Most exhibitions have only enough records to fill one folder. If records were enough to break into record series, this was done.

Boardman, Lois M., and Moore, Eudorah M., Personal Papers, 1964-1984

Physical Description: 0.5 linear feet (2 boxes)

Scope and Content Note

Records include biographical data, photographs, records of both women as jurists, consultants, and panelists, correspondence, and awards and honors. This subgroup contains a splendid set of correspondence documenting California Design's separation from the Pasadena Art Museum, including Mrs. Moore's letter of termination. Another prominent series is the Blue Four materials, documenting Mrs. Moore's activities as a member of the Blue Four Committee of the Pasadena Art Museum and her work with persons managing the papers and artwork of this prominent group of 20th century European painters.
Also in this subgroup are papers that document Mrs. Moore's tenure as Crafts Coordinator of the Visual Arts Program at the National Endowment for the Arts (1978-1981). A major subseries relates to the National Crafts Planning Project (1980-1981) for which Mrs. Moore served as Project Director, and is particularly rich in documentation of the efforts to create a grassroots national crafts organization with federal support. The National Crafts Planning Project culminated in a national Congress held in May 1981.
Arranged alphabetically by type of record, grouped by individual.
