    Acquisition Information

The Columbia Research Collection was given to The Bancroft Library by Hero Eugene Rensch in 1942.

    Scope and Content

The Columbia Research Collection consists of research materials, primarily newspaper, magazine and book abstracts, and indexes referring to the mining town of Columbia, California, and the surrounding area, 1850-1879. The bulk of the collection is a descriptive index, primarily to Tuolumne County newspapers: Sonora Herald, Tuolumne Courier, Union Democrat, Columbia Gazette, Columbia Times, and Columbia Citizen. Newspapers from metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Sacramento are also included.
This material was collected and compiled for the United States Works Progress Administration and the California State Emergency Relief Administration, under the auspices of the California Division of Parks. The project was directed by Hero Eugene Rensch.
The W.P.A./S.E.R.A. project, completed in 1936, resulted in the volume Descriptive Index to Items Referring to the Mining Town of Columbia, California, 1850-1870. The cards containing the raw research for this volume are contained in Carton 6, card file box #32, and Carton 7, card file boxes #33, #34, #35, #36 and #37. However, Mr. Rensch continued to add to this collection until 1942 when it was presented to The Bancroft Library. The cards for this expanded index are in card file boxes #1-14, contained in Cartons 1-3.
