Abstract: Paul Landry Monette (1945-1995) was a novelist and poet. He received a best biography nomination from the National Book Critics'
Circle and won the National Book Award for nonfiction in 1992. The collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, proofs,
notes, screenplays, plays, daybooks, memorabilia, photographs, clippings, and printed material related to Monette's life and
literary career. Also included in the collection are the papers of two of Monette's significant others, Roger Horwitz and
Stephen Kolzak.

A 2012 addition, comprised of 13 journals, was processed and described by Aaron Gorelik in 2013 in the Center for Primary
Research and Training (CFPRT) with the assistance of Jillian Cuellar. Previously unprocessed materials were also arranged
and described by Gorelik in 2014.
Receiving his PhD from the UCLA Department of English in 2014, Gorelik wrote his dissertation about the effects of the early
AIDS epidemic on the course of American poetry. He discovered his dissertation topic by way of Monette's book Love Alone:
Eighteen Elegies for Rog (1988) and focused his dissertation's first chapter, as well as a related article, on Monette. At
UCLA, he taught Monette's poetry, memoirs, and novels in a number of forums.

Paul Landry Monette was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on October 16, 1945; BA, English, Yale, 1967; taught at Cheshire
Academy, Connecticut, 1968-70; taught at Milton Academy, Massachusetts, and Pine Manor College, 1970-76; met Roger Horwitz
in 1974 and the two moved to Los Angeles, California, 1977; writings include
Carpenter at the Asylum (1975),
Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll (1978),
The Gold Diggers (1979),
Long Shot (1981), and
No Witnesses (1981); after Horwitz's death in 1986, Monette wrote
Love Alone: 18 Elegies for Rog (1988),
Borrowed Time: an AIDS Memoir (1988),

Scope and Content
Collection consists of correspondence, manuscripts, proofs, notes, screenplays, plays, daybooks, memorabilia, photographs,
clippings, and printed material related to the life and literary career of Paul Monette. Materials in the collection reflect
Monette's childhood, education, relationships with significant others, writings, and public appearances. Correspondences in
the collection include fan mail as well as letters from many prominent literary figures and gay and lesbian activist leaders.
Daybooks document his life as a gay man in Los Angeles during the post-Stonewall rebellion and the beginning of the AIDS epidemic.
Photographs document his receipt of the National Book Award in 1992, Monette's various friendships, and his home life with
partners Roger Horwitz, Stephen Kolzak, and Winston Wilde. Portrait photographs include prints by Robert Giard, photographer
of gay and lesbian authors. Also included in the collection are the papers of two of Monette's previous significant others,
Roger Horwitz and Stephen Kolzak. The 2012 addition to the papers consists of 13 journals, dating from 1971-1992.
Expanded Scope and Content
These papers represent all those saved by Paul Monette and include documents relating to his childhood, education, significant
others, writing career, activism, honors, and celebrity.
The papers contain a fairly complete sampling of manuscripts and publication materials including notes, rough drafts, typed
drafts, and editor's and printer's copies of galley proofs. There are copies of his screenplays, television scripts, and plays.
Notably, no complete manuscript of
Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll or
Becoming a Man appear in the papers (the latter was written and submitted on diskette); nor do the papers include a complete set of the
literary journals that printed his poems. Monette provided copies of most of his books, including novelizations, and those
are cataloged separately. (A copy of
No Witnesses was not provided.)
Also found in the papers are clippings and copies of reviews and recordings of general speeches and appearances made for the
publicity of particular published works. A substantial holding of fan mail has been filed in relationship to the published
works in reference. There are manuscripts and notes pertaining to others' works, including some for which Monette wrote blurbs
or prefaces, including
A Rock and a Hard Place, by Anthony Godby Johnson. Records of Monette's poems set to music, primarily from
Love Alone, can be found: composers include Ned Rorem, Roger Bourland, Jeffrey Brody, and Gary Bachlund.
Memorabilia, photographs, and daybooks cover his entire life. There are few snapshots of his childhood and adolescence. Some
are interfiled in a baby book, but most primarily date to after his graduation from college. His home life with his partners
Roger Horwitz, Stephen Kolzak, and Winston Wilde, and some friendships, particularly with Craig Rowland, Rudy Kikel, and Cesar
Albini, are chronicled. There are few photographs from publicity tours, etcetera, that do not appear in publications. There
are some photographs from his presentation at the Library of Congress after receiving the National Book Award in 1992. Portraits
include prints by photographer Robert Giard, noteworthy photographer of gay and lesbian authors. Significantly, the papers
hold all thirteen diaries Monette diligently kept from 1971 to 1992.
Correspondents represented in the papers include many prominent literary figures as well as gay and lesbian activist leaders,
such as Louis Untermeyer, Richard Howard, Rudy Kikel, Joey Terrill, Elisabeth Nonas, Teresa DeCrecenzo, John Preston, Richard
Labonté, Mark Thompson, Malcolm Boyd, Mark Thompson, Katherine V. Forrest, Betty Berzon, Torie Osborn, Michael Denneny, Doug
Sadownick, Larry Duplechan, Gay Block, Malka Drucker, Guru Ma Jaya, Vito Russell, Alfred Corn, Philip Gambone, Eloise Klein
Healy, David Groff, and Alison Bechdel. There are correspondences with fans, some of whom became friends--for example, Sascha
Bittner. Condolences on the deaths of Roger Horwitz and Stephen Kolzak are extant. However, few outgoing correspondences exist
in the papers, except for some photocopies of letters Monette evidently wished to save as well as letters he wrote to his
parents during his first European tour that they, presumably, kept.
Also in Monette's papers are those of his two significant others who preceded him in death, Roger Horwitz and Stephen Kolzak.
Those for Horwitz include records of his education, travel, and residence in France and friendship with Madeleine Follain,
daughter of painter Maurice Denis. Horwitz's papers include poetry, diaries, correspondences, and documents pertaining to
his post-Stonewall friendships with Craig Rowland and Rudy Kikel. Kolzak's records primarily consist of clippings and photographs;
some relate to his work as casting director for the television series
Cheers.

There was no filing order to the records as received. Paul Monette reviewed his papers and made some identifying notes and
dates before giving them to the UCLA Library; he also reviewed a first draft finding aid to supply further dates (primarily
of early poem manuscripts and publications), but he died before the processing was completed.
Materials are arranged largely chronologically. Accurate dates, however, were frequently difficult to determine. In the case
of Monette's writings, the first publication or genesis of a work constituted the filing date for its related materials.

Scope and Content
In the first of his thirteen journals, dating from August 8, 1971 to December 5, 1972, Paul Monette records his thoughts on
his sexuality, poetry, and various occupations.
In the first half of the journal, Monette frequently expresses a wish to quit teaching literature on the high school level
and become, instead, an interior decorator. Starting in Ipswich, as Monette completes his tenure as a theater instructor for
Phillip Exeter Academy's summer programs, the journal subsequently documents Monette's second year as a literature instructor
at Milton Academy. During this period, he regularly visits with friends and family in Boston, Milton, Andover, and Lawrence.
He frequently worries that his previous bouts of pneumonia will return, that his loved ones will disapprove of his plan to
launch an interior design business with his friend Mary (also referred to as "mvm"), and that a past affair he engaged in
with a student named David while working at Cheshire Academy will continue to haunt him. The first half of the journal additionally
documents two trips Monette takes to Houston with Mary—in hopes of garnering clients for their design business—as well as
a trip he takes alone to Paris.
Throughout the second half of the journal, Monette explores and discusses his sexuality at length. As his plans with Mary
begin to fall apart, he seeks out therapy, wherein he works to suppress his feelings for a male student at Milton named Andy
(also "AR") and strengthen a burgeoning relationship with a young woman named Julia Cameron (also "JBC"). At this time, Monette
actively pursues sexual relationships with a number of women, chiefly his acquaintances Sally and Emily. He explicitly recounts
a number of performance difficulties with them. Monette additionally records engaging sexually—despite his conviction not
to—with a few men during this period. The first journal, it should be added, features prominently in his memoir Becoming a
Man: Half a Life Story (1992), where he describes it as "so numbly unconscious, it takes [his] breath away to reread it today"
(220). This fact might explain why some marginalia appears in the second half of the first journal, such as brackets marked
in pencil. These brackets often correspond with passages Monette excerpts in Becoming a Man. On two occasions in the journal,
brief marginal comments appear; both respond to his then sexual anxieties (pages 73 and 141 of the journal). The journal's
second half also conveys an increasing sense of friction between Monette and his immediate family.
Throughout, Monette expresses his thoughts on literature and his creative writing. He frequently discuses the writers and
texts he teaches, especially the works of Wallace Stevens. He recounts a number of poetry readings he gives and attends. For
example, he finds the poems that Adrienne Rich recites "embarrassing" (140). He discusses poems he is in the process of writing,
many of which appear in his first volume of poetry. He intermittently quotes, without preface or commentary, passages from
poets, playwrights, and philosophers, such as W. H. Auden and Henry Adams.
The first journal contains a handful of notable features. A photograph of Monette is taped inside the front cover of the journal.
Two items are taped inside the back cover: a piece of paper monogrammed with his and Julia's initials and what appears to
be Monette's teaching schedule from the 1971-1972 school year. Two items are tucked into its back pages: a playbill from Monette's
1971 summer job as theater director at Exeter and two pages of typed journal entries. One of these typed entries replicates
in full a hostile "fan" letter Monette wrote to Ezra Pound; this entry happens to be dated October 29, 1972, exactly three
days before Pound's death.

In the second of his thirteen journals, dating from August 8, 1971 to December 5, 1972, Paul Monette documents his troubled
feelings over his sexuality and chronicles significant developments in his literary career.
Written for the most part in and around the Boston area, the second journal begins with Monette describing a complicated web
of sexual encounters with his friends Sally (also referred to as "SJ"), Mary (also "mvm"), and Shannon (also "RFS"). Throughout
the journal, Monette records his thoughts on what becomes a long-standing relationship with a young woman named Virginia (also
"Ginny," "VA," or "V"), a short-lived but impassioned relationship with a young man named Pep Jensen (or, perhaps, "Pip"),
and "cruising" at a local gay bar called "Sporter's." He notes socializing with Mary's gay male friends John and Roger (not
Roger Horwitz, Monette's later partner) as well. With the expressed hopes of fostering a purely heterosexual identity, Monette
visits regularly, the journal records, with a therapist named Rick Friswell (also "RF"—not to be confused with "RFS"). In
some of his more distraught entries, Monette talks to—even curses at—himself as well as addresses Friswell and personifies
his journal. On three occasions within the journal, Monette details sexually explicit and highly anxious dreams. Periodically,
Monette identifies factors that he sees as contributing to his emotional fragility at this time. Some of these factors include
surgery his mother undergoes to remove what turns out to be a benign tumor, a rash on his groin doctors determine to be Herpes,
his often unactualized aspirations to quit smoking and exercise more frequently at the local YMCA, and the emerging Watergate
scandal, which he and Virginia follow closely.
At the same time, the second journal tracks developments in Monette's professional life and writing career. During this period,
Monette works as a theatre teacher and director at Phillip Exeter Academy in the summers and as an English instructor at Milton
Academy over the school years. The journal additionally describes Monette's struggle to get his and Mary's fledgling interior
design business off the ground. His friendship with a gay couple, poet Richard Howard and novelist Sandy Friedman, who live
in New York City, brings Monette in contact with literary elite. He mentions visiting with Anne Sexton, John Hollander, and
James Merrill at their private residences, partaking in soirées at Frank Bidart's home, spending part of a day with Allen
Ginsberg (whom he kisses on the cheek), frequenting poetry readings (most notably, those given by Randall Jarrell and Stanley
Kunitz), and attending two high-profile funerals—for Jean Garrigue and Gordon Cairnie—where he brushes elbows with—respectively—Elizabeth
Bishop and Adrienne Rich. The second journal records Monette's excitement when Little, Brown and Company accepts his manuscript—presumably
his first book of poems, The Carpenter at the Asylum (1975)—for publication. Occasionally, Monette discusses the process of
writing poems that eventually appear in his later poetry volume No Witnesses (1980), the poems "Degas" and "The Practice of
Arrows" in particular.
Throughout the journal, Monette comments on the literature he reads for pleasure. A list of the fiction he reads includes
Murdoch's The Black Prince, Shulman's Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen, Conrad's The Secret Agent, Hellman's Pentimento, McHale's
Principato, Bennett's Buried Alive, Updike's Of the Farm, and O'Connor's "The Artificial Nigger," as well as the works of
John Cheever, Sarah Orne Jewett, Graham Greene, Marcel Proust, and Margery Allingham. A list of the nonfiction includes I'm
OK, You're OK, Thoreau's Walden, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, Sackville-West's Portrait of a Marriage, Al Alvarez' criticism
on Sylvia Plath, and W. H. Auden's essay on Alfred, Lord Tennyson. A list of the poetry includes the works of Robert Lowell,
Ted Hughes, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Gerald Manley Hopkins, John Berryman, Malcolm Cowley, and Sappho. Similarly, Monette
discusses at times the literary works he teaches, such as King Lear, Paradise Lost (and "Lycidas"), The Great Gatsby, The
Country Wife, and Spark's Memento Mori, as well as those of Hart Crane, Anne Bradstreet, Chaucer, Robert Frost, W. D. Snodgrass,
Richard Wilbur, and Jorge Luis Borges.
Finally, the second journal contains a number of notable features. A business card from "Sandpiper Beach House" in Provincetown
and a photograph of Monette (that he describes on page 103) are taped inside the journal's front cover. Taped inside its back
cover is a photograph of Monette. A handwritten note from a friend (most likely Virginia) is tucked into the front of the
journal. Taped to the front flyleaf is a clasped envelop containing eight distinct items: two schedules handwritten on loose-leaf
notebook pages; a magazine clipping; two notes from friends (from Virginia and a woman named Wendy); two typed playbills from
his stints as Exeter's summer theatre director; and one loose-leaf journal entry. Within the journal, Monette diagrams the
floorplans of three apartments, including James Merrill's in Stonington, CT.

Journal Three
23 Februrary 1974-13 May 1975

Scope and Content
In the third of his thirteen journals, dating from February 23, 1974 to May 13, 1975, Paul Monette expresses his thoughts
on the books he reads, the poems he writes, and the literature he teaches. He also describes meeting and dating Roger Horwitz,
his partner of twelve years.
The third journal begins with Monette considering new ways to structure his entries, desiring a more impressionistic and less
narrative form than in the two previous journals. Throughout, he recounts trips to Dartmouth, Sea Island, GA, New Haven, CT,
New York City, and Provincetown, MA. He describes ongoing quarrels with old friends (primarily Sally, or "SJ," and Shannon,
or "RSF"), his desire to quit smoking cigarettes, eat healthier, and reduce his dependence on "dope," and his therapy sessions
with Rick Friswell (or "RF"). He also expresses pleasure at reconnecting with two men named Sandy—"Sandy F," the novelist
Sanford Friedman, and "Sandy," the writer J. D. McClatchy—and commencing a romantic relationship with the former. A third
of the way through the journal, on September 2, 1974, Monette marks the occasion of meeting his future life partner by simply
writing, "Roger Horwitz." The brevity of the entry anticipates Monette's later rendering of the occasion near the end of his
memoir Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story (1992): "Roger Horwitz, Paul Monette. Say hello to the rest of your life" (276).
From that point on, the journal primarily focuses on their fledging relationship as well as Monette's struggle to choose definitively
between Roger and Sandy F. The third journal also conveys a sense of Monette's eventually life-long fascination with Henry
David Thoreau and Walden Pond, where—as the third journal records—he frequently reads, sunbathes, and skinny dips. As in previous
journals, Monette remarks on a number of his encounters with literary elite such as James Merrill, Frank Bidart, Helen Vendler,
and Harold Bloom (who was Monette's undergraduate thesis advisor). Periodically, Monette describes highly sexual dreams that
trouble him, the process of composing his poems, the daily grind of instructing literature classes at Milton Academy, and
visits with his immediate family. In these passages, Monette analyzes his mother's behavior through an explicitly and self-consciously
Freudian lens. He occasionally notes, as well, positive advances in his poetry career. The final entry, for instance, records
Monette receiving the first hardcopy of his first volume of poems, The Carpenter at the Asylum (1975), in the mail.
Throughout the third journal, Monette discusses works of literature as he reads them. Virginia Wolfe's diaries, the first
two volumes of Proust's In Search of Lost Time, Robert Frost's poems, and W. B. Yeats' poems feature most prominently. Often
recopying long passages from texts he finds noteworthy, Monette expresses a particular affinity in the third journal for Zen
and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. On a few occasions, Monette develops his thoughts on the literature he teaches at Milton.
On pages 158 through 161 of the journal, for instance, Monette passionately explicates Frankenstein. Explicitly identifying
himself with the monster, Monette adds that Frankenstein "is a terribly moving book, terribly rich" and that "one wants so
much for Victor and his monster to love each other" (underlined in the original).
The third journal also contains a few noteworthy features. Taped to the inside of the journal's front cover is a photograph
of Monette from Sea Island as well as a roundtrip ticket for a boat ride from Boston to Provincetown. A map of Walden and
its surrounding areas issued by the "Thoreau Lyceum" (which Monette describes on page 260 of the journal) is taped onto the
back flyleaf. Finally, taped to the inside of the back cover is a photograph of Monette, in which he appears nude and standing
in a shallow swimming hole beside a waterfall.

Journal Four

In the fourth of his thirteen journals, dating from May 15, 1975 to August 12, 1977, Paul Monette records his thoughts on
his evolving relationship with Roger Horwitz and his writing career.
The fourth journal begins with Monette and Roger (also referred to as "Rog" or "R") moving into separate apartments. Soon
thereafter, however, they move in together. Throughout, the journal chronicles vacations the two take together to Maine, Florida,
Provincetown, Chicago, Paris, Washington, D.C., and California. In California, they travel down the coast from San Francisco
to Sand Diego, stopping at many locales along the way, including Big Sur, Carmel, Hearst's Castle, Los Angeles, and Laguna
Beach. During these years, Monette expresses the desire to move to Los Angeles even though the idea of such a move causes,
as he notes, him and Roger to worry over the longevity of their relationship. Referring to his "cruising" on the Boston Esplanade
and at the community gym, Monette comments on Roger's occasional bouts of jealousy over what he refers to as Monette's "flings."
Nevertheless, Monette regularly communicates a strong affection for Roger, especially when he and Roger are apart. Occasionally
seeing a therapist of his own (Rick Friswell, or "RF"), Monette registers his concerns over Roger's therapy and psychoanalysis.
Toward the end of the journal, Monette details a second and longer trip he takes alone to LA in order to promote his writing
career and assess his feelings about moving there, with or without Roger. While there, he stays, for the most part, at the
Bel Air home of Roger's half-brother Sheldon Andelson. Throughout the journal, Monette records worrying over moments of ill
health, jots down notes on academic lectures, discusses meeting celebrities who he considers personal heroes (such as Joan
Didion and Joan Baez), and explores his feelings when rereading portions of his previous journals. In addition, Monette scatters
throughout the journal quotations from various authors, including Walt Whitman, Jane Austen, and Hunter S. Thompson.
During this period, Monette describes a variety of occasions he spends with friends and family. Passing most of his time with
dear friends Cesar and Craig, Monette additionally recounts visiting with Shannon (also "RFS"), Star Black, Rudy, Andy ("AR"),
the couple John and Roger, Julia Cameron (his ex-girlfriend, who marries in this period Martin Scorsese), David Schorr, Sanford
Friedman, Richard Howard, James Merrill, David Kalstone, and J.D. McClatchy (who begins dating poet and critic Alfred Corn
in this period). Periodically, Monette notes visiting, as well, Gertrude Macy (or, "Gert") at Martha's Vineyard and Sneden's
Landing. He writes about Gert in his later book of essays Last Watch of the Night: Essays Too Personal and Otherwise (1994),
a fact that might explain why many of the pages in the journal where she appears are dog-eared. In a few entries, Monette
discusses the marriage of his brother, Bob, to longtime girlfriend, Brenda. In one of these entries, Monette—uncharacteristically—prays:
"Oh, please bless them, any odd god around, they are so innocent" (page 48 of the journal). Monette frequently mentions his
mother's mounting curiosity in regards to Roger. His mother seems—Monette writes—"to ask in every sentence—why don't you tell
me you're gay?" (page 142).
As his writing career begins to thrive, Monette occasionally remarks on his growing comfort with the idea of being a writer.
He mentions composing many of the poems that would eventually find their way into his second collection (No Witnesses [1981]),
two screenplays (the first of which is titled Lovers and Dancers) with his friend John (of John and Roger, or "JK"), and an
untitled television script. As the fourth journal documents, Monette also receives a writing fellowship from Harry Ford for
five-thousand dollars, takes a year off from teaching at Milton Academy, teaches two graduate literature courses at Clark
University, writes his first novel, Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll (1978), begins writing his second, The Gold Diggers (1979),
and acquires a literary agent, Wendy Weil, who sells his first novel to Roger Donald at Little, Brown, and Company. On occasion,
Monette notes when publications, such as Poetry or Christopher Street, accept his poems for print.
The fourth journal contains a number of notable features. It includes a photograph of Monette taped inside the front cover,
a photograph of Monette taped inside the back cover, a hand-written calendar on a piece of lined loose-leaf paper tucked between
pages 108 and 109, a piece of adhesive tape on the edge of the back cover where Monette tried to repair a torn edge (see page
166), a letter by Cesar to Monette written on pages 263 and 264 directly, and what seems to be an autograph from Bette Davis
(page 243). In addition, Monette cataloged the books he read during this period on the final two pages of the journal.

In the fifth of his thirteen journals, dating from August 13, 1977 to November 15, 1979, Paul Monette records his thoughts
on moving to Los Angeles, his career, and his increasingly busy schedule.
Sporadically kept, the fifth journal begins by chronicling Monette and his partner Roger Horwitz's trip to London. Soon thereafter,
when Roger secures a new job as a lawyer with a West Coast development firm, the journal shifts its focus to their impending
move to Los Angeles. Eventually buying a home on Kings Road in Hollywood (now West Hollywood), where he and Roger lived out
the rest of their lives, Monette records his initial excitement over the canyon neighborhood of Beverly Glen. They rent a
house there for a year. Throughout the journal, Monette details multiple trips back east to Boston, New Haven, and New York
City as well as a vacation he takes with Roger to Hawaii. As the journal records, the couple celebrate their fourth and fifth
anniversaries, respectively, by camping on the California-Oregon border and by renting cabins at Big Sur. During these years,
Monette mentions "cruising" at public parks and abandoned docks as well as attending adult movie houses. The journal twice
records Monette and Roger going to the doctor to be treated for gonorrhea. Monette frequently refers to using "dope" and,
on occasion, cocaine (or, as he sometimes calls it, "tooting"). The fifth journal also notes that Monette's parents and brother
begin treating Roger "like family." The journal chronicles his parents' visits out west to see him, his parents' and brother's
financial difficulties, a discussion he and his parents have about his novels' gay subject matter, and a few occasions he
and Roger spend with Roger's parents, Al and Bea (referred to as the "in-laws").
For the most part, however, the fifth journal conveys a sense of Monette's increasingly hectic and demanding schedule as well
as his desire to shift his creative focus from poetry to novels and screenplays. During this period, Monette describes working
on multiple writing projects, sometimes jotting down notes on their themes and plots within the journal. As his first novel
Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll (1978) appears in print, receiving mostly positive reviews, Monette discusses writing and selling,
with the help of his agent Wendy Weil, his second novel, Gold Diggers (1979), to Robert ("Bob") Wyatt at Avon Books. He mentions
writing and revising his third novel, The Long Shot (1981) and novelizing, under contract to Universal Pictures, Werner Herzog's
Nosferatu. Monette recounts partnering with an associate named Renee to write three screenplays. They do so under the direction
of producer Howard Rosenman and Universal executive Thom Mount. They title the first two screenplays No Contest and Time Out.
The third remains unnamed and incomplete by the fifth journal's end. Throughout, Monette discusses the ins and outs of Rosenman's
negotiations with actors—such as Jill Clayburgh, Christopher Walken, and Peter Bogdonavich—to star in No Contest. In addition,
Monette records traveling with Renee (as well as Roger) to Philadelphia to observe a court case as research for a screenplay.
The fifth journal documents, as well, Monette's increasing savoir-faire with the entertainment and publishing industries.
Mingling with gay literary elite, such as Gore Vidal, Edmund White, and Christopher Isherwood (who refuses to endorse Monette's
first novel), Monette frequently notes interviewing with the "gay press." Monette documents circulating in the entertainment
industry as well, sighting and meeting celebrities such as LeVar Burton, John Wayne, Angie Dickenson, Robert De Niro, and
John Brahm. Due to the influx of money from his various writing projects, Monette buys a Datsun and White Mercedes. The success
also bolsters, maybe even inflates, Monette's sense of confidence, leading him to declare in one entry that no one is "ahead"
of him as a writer, adding, "I mean it" (page 109).
The fifth journal includes some notable features. There are two photos of Monette wearing the same outfit and most likely
taken during his and Roger's trip to London taped in the journal, one inside the front cover and one inside the back. A clipping
that reads "The Beale house in Grey Gardens" is taped to the inside of the journal's front cover as well. Also taped inside
the back cover is a photograph of what seems to be the backyard of Monette and Roger's home on Kings Road. Inside the journal
is John Brahm's autograph (page 68) and diagrams of his and Roger's cabins at Big Sur river (pages 133 and 134). In the back
of the journal, Monette catalogs the books he reads as well as registers some terse one-word reviews, such as "Shit" and "Marvelous."

Journal Six

In the sixth of his thirteen journals, dating from November 18, 1979 to September 28, 1982, Paul Monette primarily registers
his thoughts on his evolving relationship with Roger Horwitz, his love affair with Louis Weisberg, and his writing career.
The sixth journal begins by recording a series of vacations Monette and Roger (also referred to as "Rog" and "R") take to
New York City, Napa Valley, San Francisco, and France. Monette notes that while in Paris they meet, by happenstance, Andy
Warhol, who, having heard of Monette's second novel, The Gold Diggers (1979), takes a photograph of the couple. Monette observes
throughout the journal that, despite this noteworthy recognition, his most recent novel sells poorly and receives poor reviews,
shaking his confidence and the outlook for his career. Despite selling his third novel, The Long Shot (1981), to Avon, Monette
worries over the "near silence" that greets it (page 90 of the journal). As a result, Monette struggles, as the sixth journal
records, to complete his fourth novel manuscript, Lightfall. The sixth journal conveys as well a sense of growing uncertainty
surrounding Monette's screenwriting career, which his writing partner Renee declares—as the journal reports it—"over for the
moment" (page 191). Monette recurrently attributes this dire outcome to an ongoing entertainment industry strike. Hired by
a billionaire from Texas, Francois de Menil, Monette adapts the book Nothing But the Truth and the novel The Hamptons into
screenplays, receiving up to a hundred thousand dollars for the latter project. Monette mentions traveling to the Hamptons
to conduct research for this project, where he stays at one of David Geffen's homes and socializes with Lorne Michaels and
Paul Simon. During this period, Monette also briefly mentions working on screenwriting projects called "Perfect Strangers"
and "In a Lovely Place" and on a novel about Hawaii, as well as acquiring an additional agent named Lorraine (he retains his
original agent, Wendy Weil).
The majority of the sixth journal, however, documents Monette's sudden and passionate affair with a young hustler named Louis
(also "L"). Monette even jots and revises an unpublished poem about Louis (page 102). Self-reflective about the fact that
his passion for the young man might in fact be interrelated to his faltering writing career and perennial psychological concerns,
Monette periodically relates the turbulence of these years to the turbulence of those recorded in his first two journals.
At this time, Monette begins writing down notes from his therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville—a pattern that continues throughout
all of his subsequent journals. These notes frequently delve into the links between Monette's fear of death, his personal
guilt surrounding his brother's disabilities, his feelings of having missed out on his sexual adolescence, his growing boredom
with Roger, and his desire to be more masculine and less "passive." The notes from these sessions also link Monette's feelings
about Louis' hustling to his screenwriting career, which he describes as literary "prostitution." Frequently, as he weighs
the pros and cons of his relationship with Roger and what he frequently calls his "obsession" with Louis, Monette's entries
grow fragmented and sprawling, featuring arrows, flowcharts, emphatic underlines, and an excess of brackets. Monette takes
note of his friends' input on the topic; more often than not, Michael Grace, writer J. D. McClatchy, David Schorr, and poet
Charles Wright point out Louis' shortcomings. As he explores a renewed and explicitly-described sexual fervor and jots down
the names of those he encounters sexually, Monette remarks that Roger has grown "sick of the whoring and the affairs" (page
279). The journal reports that Roger debates leaving the practice of law to become a writer as well. Monette additionally
discusses nurturing Louis's ambition to write a play, a situation that inspires Monette, in turn, to write two plays of his
own: "Just the Summers" and "Seven Point Two." Throughout this period, Monette comments on his mother's declining health and
his parents' visits to Los Angeles. The journal comes to a close with Monette imaginatively addressing Louis, his therapist,
Roger, McClatchy, and himself, advising each of them (including himself) on how each should behave going forward. The final
journal entry mentions, as well, Monette's new, if short-lived, love interest—a man named Arthur.
Monette's first reference to what would become the AIDS crisis occurs two-thirds of the way through the sixth journal: "The
horror of the sickness. The visit to the doctor's. The fissure. The gay cancer scare. The poppers. Sense of grunginess. The
sewage running down the street outside" (217, original underlining). A few other notable features occur as well. Tucked between
pages 2 and 3 of the journal is a handwritten schedule of a trip to Greece and London (taken, so it seems, during a later
period). Wedged between pages 140 to 141 is a greeting card bearing no signature (though most likely from Roger). Monette
sketches his hotel rooms in France as well as views from their windows on pages 18, 19, 23, and 24. In the margin of page
61, Monette notes that an entry from "1/13[/81] is on a folded page in the flyleaf" but no such page has been found. A chronological
and annotated list of books Monette read during this period—including his first two novels (the second of which, he comments,
"seemed wonderfully whole, if a bit hard on the reader" [296])—can be found on the journal's final pages. Also, the journal's
chronological flow is interrupted toward its end by notes Monette haphazardly scrawls while writing his plays.

Journal Seven
9 October 1982-23 August 1983

In the seventh of his thirteen journals, dating from October 9, 1982 to August 23, 1983, Paul Monette documents the process
of writing a number of screenplays as well as his frequently troubled thoughts on his relationship with Roger Horwitz.
Diverging from earlier journals, the seventh journal mostly functions for Monette as a notebook wherein he brainstorms ideas
for his writing projects. Throughout this period, Monette mostly focuses on writing and refining, in collaboration with producers
Howard Rosenman, Lindsay Doran, Allan Stewart, and Jeff Young, and in association with Norman Lear and Avco Embassy Pictures,
a screenplay entitled 15 Minutes about a young woman who reluctantly becomes a model and a star. The screenplay additionally
features two drag queens, a young chemist, and a fashion designer. However, the seventh journal depicts Monette working on
a number of screenplays, novels, and plays. Working with the same affiliates, as well as several others, Monette develops
treatments for a romantic comedy that he roots in Greek mythology, at first called "Wildwood" and then titled "Winter Spring,"
in which a love triangle springs up between a modern day mortal man (who becomes enchanted and begins to age backwards), a
nymph, and a faun. By the end of the journal, Monette reworks the treatment into a plot for a novel. Monette outlines what
seems to be a television series called "American Maid" in which three aspiring actresses live in the same building and even
sketches the floor plan of their imagined building on page 107 of the journal. He briefly mentions two unspecified projects
called "Sister" and "Gift Wrapped" and two novel ideas (one that would take place in Hawaii and the other in Laguna Beach).
He occasionally comments on writing, revising, and publishing a novelization of the movie Scarface as well. Throughout this
period, Monette notes revising his first play Just the Summers extensively and editing his second play Seven Point Two to
a lesser extent. Throughout the course of the seventh journal, Monette relates the interest several stage producers—Robert
Levithan and Barry Krost in particular—express in regards to his first play. Monette takes notes in his journal on rehearsals
Krost mounts of Just the Summers in New York City. Throughout, Monette remarks on meeting with executives at Paramount, such
as, most notably, Jeffrey Katenzberg.
Intermittently, Monette discusses his personal life. Most of these entries are comprised of notes Monette takes at therapy
sessions with Sam Dubreville. These entries frequently focus on Monette's struggle to find a balance between his sexual fantasies,
his sexual encounters, and his relationship with Roger (also referred to as "Rog" and "R"). While it commences with Monette
describing the painful closure of his brief affair with a man named Arthur, Monette discusses throughout the journal his recurrent
and powerful feelings over a hustler named Louis Weisberg (also "L"). Near the end of the journal, Monette recounts a particularly
painful period for him when Louis begins to cheat on his partner Michael with a man named Gene, a situation that awakens in
Monette feelings of envy and sexual inadequacy. The sixth journal records friction that develops between Monette and his friends
J. D. McClatchy and Alfred Corn over their differing views on questions of literary aesthetics. Monette occasionally mentions
sleeping with a man named Stuart and reminds himself to be more attentive to Roger's needs. The couple takes trips, the journal
reports, to Big Sur and Yosemite. Also, it should be noted, Monette becomes increasingly aware of the AIDS epidemic in this
period. Using the word "AIDS" for the first time on page 82 of the journal, he writes, "How does one live sexually in the
AIDS world?" A handful of long entries feature Monette thinking through strategies for how he might avoid acquiring the syndrome.
In one entry, the thought of AIDS leads Monette to ruminate on the topics of loneliness and mortality. Periodically, Monette
mentions visiting with his longtime friend Star Black as well as reading drafts of her poems.
Monette wrote a large portion of the seventh journal out of order. The last third of the journal jumps between the summer
and fall of '83 as well as the fall and winter of '82 and '83. Additionally, scribbled inside the front and back covers as
well as on the front and back flyleaves are notes on 15 Minutes. Tucked between pages 68 and 69 is the program to a production
of The Tempest sponsored by the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival. On occasion, phone numbers are jotted down in what appear to be
hands other than Monette's (on page 48, for instance, Jennifer Lee, Richard Pryor's wife, has written her number, adding,
"I think you are wonderful!"). An annotated list of books appears on the journal's final few pages. Eerily anticipating his
imminent return to poetry in the AIDS era, Monette remarks in this catalog, after reading Simpson's Poets in Their Youth
(1982), "Oh I'm so glad I'm not a poet" (page 149). He adds that poets are "sniveling types" who complain "about not enough
time" (page 149).

In the eighth of his thirteen journals, dating from December 11, 1983 to February 3, 1985, Paul Monette primarily jots down
notes about his writing projects. Occasionally, as the AIDS crisis begins to touch him personally, he records his thoughts
on mortality.
Monette begins the eighth journal by explaining a gap of three and a half months between it and the seventh. Having lost two
intervening journals, he remarks that at present "it's most important to take the time to be alive" (page 8 of the journal;
original underlining). Accordingly, as his close friend Cesar recurrently undergoes chemotherapy for Karposi's Sarcoma—a fact
he mentions as early as December 20, 1983—Monette's entries, especially those taken while attending therapy sessions with
Sam Dubreville, circulate by and large around the need to remain focused on, and make the best of, the idea of "the present."
On several occasions, Monette explicitly links this increasing awareness of time and mortality with the AIDS crisis, remarking
two-thirds of the way through the journal that "The dread-of-AIDS [. . .] is a focusing factor" (109). During this trying
period, Monette describes taking refuge in his significant other Roger Horwitz (also referred to as "Rog" and "R"). Together,
they take many short trips to Laguna Beach, Molera Beach, and Ventura as well as tour Greece, Paris, and London. As the eight
journal records, they celebrate their tenth anniversary with family and friends. Monette discuses, as well, his lingering
feelings for Louis Weisberg (also "L"), a young hustler he had a torrid affair with a couple years before. Near the end of
1984, Monette meditates on a few additional encounters with Louis. The eighth journal recounts Monette's brief interest in
a young man named Vinnie. The eight journal also documents the various health concerns of Monette's parents at this time and
Monette's shifting feelings toward his friends. While he grows more distant from a number of literary friends (such as Richard
Howard, J. D. McClatchy, and Alfred Corn), he and Roger begin to socialize with a number of new academic friends they meet
through their various connections to UCLA. One entry describes Monette's panic after his car is stolen at gunpoint in a parking
garage in West Hollywood. The journal ends with adumbrations of his and Roger's looming seropositive statuses as Monette deliberates
on their painfully swollen glands and lingering colds (150).
The eighth journal, however, mainly features the notes Monette takes while brainstorming ideas with his many writing partners.
Monette frequently refers to a screenplay called The Manicurist he, Howard Rosenman, and an associate named Eyal write as
a vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg. They try, as the journal documents, to sell this screenplay to either Avco Embassy Productions
or Disney. The journal also refers to a television show entitled No Secrets Monette and his writing partner Alfred Sole develop
for CBS as well as a "teenage horror" screenplay entitled "The Secret of the Catacombs" they write for a producer named Vanessa
Greene. Alfred, Roger, and Monette travel to Savannah at one point to conduct research for this latter project. Monette begins,
as well, to write a novel called "Small Powers" (also "Wildwood" or "Winter Spring"). Near the end of 1984, Monette and Alfred
strike tenuous deals with Warner Brother's to write shows called Double Take, Life Span, and Wizard. Searching (with the assistance
of his agent Wendy Weil) for a publisher for his most recent novel manuscript, "Lightfall," Monette lists, on page 110, the
many publishing houses that turn it down. Monette also registers notes on his play Just the Summers, which occasionally receives—the
journal relates—interest from producers in New York City. During this period, Monette discusses his involvement in a variety
of organizations, such as a writer's association and the Downtown Women's Shelter. He additionally agitates for an entertainment
industry strike by helping to write speeches for Randy, who is the life-partner of Roger's half brother Sheldon Andelson.
The eighth journal includes a few unique features. A ticket to a 1984 Los Angeles Olympics track and field event is taped
inside its front cover. Taped inside its back cover is a postcard from what seems to be Greece. On the first few pages of
the journal, Monette keeps a few lists: one that catalogs his 1983 Christmas presents; another that catalogs the expenditures
of his and Roger's trip to Greece; and a third that catalogs the names of those to whom he sent Christmas cards. Toward the
end of the journal, Monette makes similar lists in regards to the holiday season of 1984. On page 3 of the journal, out of
chronological order, Monette begins an entry, "For Bob" (presumably referring to his brother), but then records instead a
series of phone numbers that relate to his trip to France. On page 123, Monette attempts to draw a Christmas tree only to
give up, writing instead, "Oh I can't draw it." The eighth journal ends with an inventory of books he has read.

Journal Nine

In the ninth of his thirteen journals, dating from February 9, 1985 to March 8, 1986, Paul Monette records his feeling about
his partner Roger Horwitz's AIDS diagnosis and quickly declining health. The journal also documents the tribulations of Monette's
writing career during this period.
The journal starts with Monette engrossed in editing his and producer Howard Rosenman's movie script The Manicurist. Monette
also tracks Rosenman's negotiations with Disney and Whoopi Goldberg over the script. Within a few pages, when Roger (also
referred to as "Rog" and "R") and Monette visit with Dr. Dennis Cope, the journal shifts gears. The entire entry on March
12, 1985 reads, "The verdict." From that point on, the majority of Monette's entries—most of them composed as notes accompanying
his therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville—grow frantic and grief-stricken. These entries document Monette alternating between
despair and a resolve to help Roger fight through his illness. Monette also expresses a strong and complex sense of guilt.
He worries throughout the journal that he will not be patient enough as a caretaker, that he does not deserve to be healthy,
and that he might have in fact infected Roger. Monette relays Roger's fear of becoming a burden to Monette, a viewpoint Monette
vehemently counters time and again within the journal. On July 14, 1985, Monette learns that he too is seropositive. However,
Dr. Peter Wolfe, the journal records, reassures Monette that his T-Cell count indicates a low level of imminent danger. Subsequently,
Monette relates his struggles to gain access to a number of experimental drug therapies, such as Suramin and AZT (or Compound
S), keeping his finger on the anecdotal pulse of the efficacy of these drugs with the assistance of his friends Craig (also
"CPR"), Peter Mansell, and Bruce Weintraub. He recounts traveling to Tijuana in pursuit of these then-illegal drugs. Less
than a month after he and Roger visit the Boston area, on October 8, 1986, Roger is hospitalized. Beside the entry that records
this fact is a note reading "6/87 Everything changes overnight" in Monette's hand. The rest of the journal's entries are sporadically
kept and come to a close 50 pages before the end of the journal. The final entry records a trip Monette takes with Roger to
Palm Springs to visit Roger's family.
Throughout this journal, Monette grapples with the massive impact Roger's illness and the AIDS crisis have on his career.
He frequently expresses a concern that in the face of these painful realities he will not be able to continue writing. He
seriously raises the question of what else he could do with his life. Nevertheless, many entries in the ninth journal detail
Monette's engagement with multiple writing projects. While he abandons working on his novel manuscript "Small Powers" (also
referred to as "Winter Spring") and leaves his screenplays 15 Minutes and The Manicurist to Rosenman's charge, he continues
working with his writing partner Alfred Sole on new screenwriting projects. Primarily, they develop treatments for television
series to be called "Stealing Home" and "Midas Stone" (also "Wizard" or "Philosopher's Stone") as well as for a movie script
called "Sanctuary." Monette additionally recounts working with men referred to as Dyson and Cirumbolo on adapting his first
novel, Taking Care of Mrs. Carroll (1978), into a movie titled "Blueblood." On occasion, Monette sketches notes for the dedication
of and about The New Bobbi Andelson Group Home and the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Notably, the ninth journal documents
Monette's return to writing poetry. Not only does he begin to write what he labels "conspiracy poems" in collaboration with
poet Carol Muske (later known as Carol Muske-Dukes), but also he includes in the journal what seem to be two quickly-abandoned
rough drafts of poems (on pages 101 and 151).
Although Monette's journal entries end two-thirds of the way through the journal, additional writings are scattered throughout
the journal's final pages. From pages 121 to 145 Monette takes extensive notes on how modern gay history relates to the development
of the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. Page 151 features a few lines of what seems to be a poem. And the journal's final
page, 152 features an annotated list of four books. There are no photographs, clippings, markings, or inserts in either of
the journal's inner covers or flyleaves. In this regard, the ninth journal diverges from patterns established by Monette's
preceding journals.

In the tenth of his thirteen journals, dating from May 16, 1986 to September 16, 1987, Paul Monette primarily documents his
feelings about the death of his partner Roger Horwitz as well as chronicles the development of his books Love Alone: Eighteen
Elegies for Rog (1988) and Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir (1988).
As the tenth journal begins, Monette discusses various ways to help Roger (also referred to as "Rog" and "R") surmount his
illnesses, but after only a handful of entries, on the 22nd of October 1986, he records Roger's passing from AIDS-related
complications. As a result, the majority of the journal features Monette struggling to come to terms with Roger's death. Many
of these entries are recorded either at Monette's therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville or at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Memorial
Park where Monette inters Roger and where Monette himself is now buried. Monette directly addresses a portion of these entries
to Roger. In the aftermath of Roger's passing, Monette narrates many dreams he has about Roger as well as recounts his trips
back home to Andover, a few trips he takes to Palm Springs (where he visits with Roger's extended family, especially parents
Al and Bea [or "Bernice"] ), and a pilgrimage he takes with his friend Star Black to Taos, New Mexico to visit D. H. Lawrence's
grave. Following his Taos trip, Monette realizes—the journal details—that in his final hours Roger had been calling out Monette's
name, not merely moaning. This realization throws Monette into a bout of redoubled grief and depression. During this period,
Monette learns that Roger's half-brother Sheldon Andelson has acquired full-blown AIDS, befriends a woman named Eve at Forest
Lawn who lost her two-year-old son to leukemia, experiences a few sexual encounters, and organizes a variety of legal and
fiscal concerns. Beginning halfway through the tenth journal, Monette occasionally mentions rereading his and Roger's journals,
prompting him to reflect on his earlier affair with a hustler named Louis that nearly tore them apart. Increasingly aware
of his own mortality, Monette takes note of his T-Cell count frequently (as monitored by Doctors Michael Scolaro and Peter
Wolfe). Toward the end of the journal, Monette chronicles dating a thirty-one year old man named Jimmy for a few months as
well as a man named Gary (also "GB") a few times. For dozens of entries, Monette expresses an intense feeling of attachment
to Jimmy, even flying to New York City with him to scatter the ashes of Jimmy's friend Bruce.
Throughout the journal, Monette alternately articulates suicidal thoughts and the desire to remain alive so that he can write
about Roger, even referring to this desire on occasion as his "mission." The tenth journal documents Monette's impassioned
return to writing poetry again. All rough drafts of the poems from Love Alone are written in the tenth journal, as are two
lengthy fragments of uncollected poems (one of which Monette wrote before Roger's death). Monette details the process of selling
Love Alone to Michael Denneny at St. Martin's Press as well as securing an advance to write a memoir, that would become Borrowed
Time, about Roger's death. Throughout the final third of the journal, Monette tracks the progress of this project and indicates
his growing interest in publishing parts of his and Roger's journals in tandem. Monette also occasionally mentions writing
and editing a novelization of Predator and working with his writing partner Alfred Sole, producing partner Vanessa Greene,
and talent agent Wendy Weil on a large number of television projects. Most notably, he and Alfred write episodes of the television
series Hotel and Friday the 13th as well as the television movie Secret Witness (1988).
Journal ten also contains a number of noteworthy features. A photograph of Roger taken by Monette at Phillip Exeter Academy
in August of 1985 is taped to the inside of the front cover. A seemingly-older photograph of a sign at Walden Pond is taped
to the front flyleaf. At the top of journal page 147 is a list of what appears to be expressions Roger used. On page 149,
there seems to be—scribbled in between the lines of the journal's final entry—notes for a poem. On pages 150 to 152, Monette
jots the names of men—as well as their phones numbers, general locations, bodily descriptions, and their fetishes—in a haphazard
manner, occasionally crossing a name out here and there. Perhaps this information was collected by Monette via a phone-sex
hotline. Finally, on the inside of the journal's back cover, Monette drafts his epitaph, recalling a similar draft of Roger's
epitaph on page 19.

In the eleventh of his thirteen journals, dating from September 17, 1987 to February 2, 1989, Paul Monette expresses a sense
of persistent grief over the 1986 death of his partner Roger Horwitz as well as documents significant advances in his literary
career. Monette also records dating Stephen Kolzak, a casting director who became Monette's second significant other.
The eleventh journal begins with Monette struggling to establish a new life for himself that does not revolve around the trace
presence of Roger (also referred to as "Rog" and "R"). Reeling from a short lived relationship with a young man named Jimmy,
Monette travels to Italy with his friend Craig (also "CPR"), where he visits Keat's grave, writes a poem for a man he has
been dating back in Los Angeles named Gary (also "GB"), and finds himself haunted by memories of exploring Italy with Roger.
Throughout the journal, Monette transcribes a copious amount of notes from his therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville in which
he discusses the difficulties of his mostly non-sexual relationship with Gary and his guilt over feeling disloyal to Roger
by dating others. He often relates his feelings about Gary, as well as those about two other men he dates named Garrison Key
(also "GK") and Tom, to his previous affair in the early 1980s with a hustler named Louis Weintraub. Monette describes a number
of vivid dreams about Roger and discusses the death of Roger's half-brother, Sheldon Andelson, from AIDS-related complications.
The journal features Monette spending much time with Roger's family, parents Al and Bea especially, who periodically advise
Monette on his financial difficulties. Monette mentions socializing with important figures such as Barney Frank, Larry Kramer,
and Randy Shilts as well as a variety of friends and acquaintances, including Michael Grace, Harvey, Daphne, Star Black, Dan
Bailey, and David Reed. The journal chronicles several trips Monette took to the Boston and New York City areas. On occasion,
Monette explores his frustration with the way his mother "trivializes" his experiences. Two-thirds of the way through the
eleventh journal, Monette begins to date Stephen Kolzak (also "SK," "SFK," or "Stevie"), who he seems to have known through
his connections to the entertainment industry. The two take vacations to San Francisco, San Diego, and Hawaii. They attend
fundraisers as well as a political rally in Washington D.C (a rally that Monette documents in his collection of personal essays
Last Watch of the Night [1994]). Toward the end of the journal Monette worries about Stephen's violent mood swings and declining
health (the latter due to AIDS-related complications). He additionally expresses jealously over Stephen's sexual past and
recounts a number of stormy arguments that occur between them.
During this period, Monette begins to achieve the status of literary celebrity. He records launching his poetry volume Love
Alone: Eighteen Elegies for Rog (1988) at a reading in New York City as well as taking a whirlwind book tour of NYC, Los Angeles,
Seattle, and Houston to promote Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir (1988). Often writing down thoughts that pertain to what he
would like to say during his interviews and at readings as well as how he would like to present himself, Monette conveys an
increasing desire to use his new public platform as a political tool. While preparing for an interview on Good Morning American,
Monette plans to describe the AIDS crisis as a "Passive genocide of the Reagan administration" (page 73 of the journal). Monette
notes Borrowed Time's nomination for the National Book Critics' Circle Award, chronicles the process of writing his novel
manuscript Afterlife (originally titled "The Widowers"), mentions novelizing the movie Midnight Run, alludes to writing television
scripts with his partner Alfred Sole and associate Nola Leone, and discusses meetings with editors Michael Denneny and David
Groff.
Notably, the eleventh journal contains rough drafts of four poems Monette later publishes in his poetry volume, West of Yesterday,
East of Summer (1994): "Ed Dying," "To GB from Tuscany," "Waiting to Die," and "Stephen at the FDA." Journal entries cease
on page 104 and it seems as though approximately 30 pages have been excised from the journal's end. Monette indicates on page
9 that a poem draft might have existed on what would have been page 148 of the journal. Finally, taped inside the front cover
of the journal is a scenic postcard, most likely from Monette's trip to Italy with Craig, as well as a Muni Railway ticket
from San Francisco.

In the twelfth of his thirteen journals, dating from May 14, 1989 to June 20, 1991, Paul Monette documents his thoughts on
a dynamic period in his life in which his second significant other, Stephen Kolzak, dies from AIDS-related complications,
his emerging literary celebrity continues to grow, and he dates his third and final significant other, Winston Wilde.
The twelfth journal starts with Monette and Stephen (also referred to as "SK," "SFK," and "Stevie") taking a cruise, in which
they chiefly visit Croatia, Italy, and France. Monette records two subsequent cruises with Stephen, one around French Polynesia
and the other around Greece and Turkey. They travel to Ventura, California and Molera Beach at Big Sur. As the twelfth journal
indicates, many of these trips and those taken with others later on remind Monette of similar travels with his partner of
twelve years, Roger Horwitz (also "Rog" and "R"). A third of the way through the journal, Monette records his grief over his
mother's death and, soon thereafter, Stephen's death. Focused on Stephen's loss in particular, the middle-third of the twelfth
journal features many long entries composed at Monette's therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville. These entries depict Monette
struggling with a sense of redoubled survivor's guilt, having outlived two life partners, as well as relate Monette's recurrent
impulse to compare his two mourning processes. The journal's middle portion also registers notes Monette takes while composing
a eulogy for Stephen, an epitaph for Stephen's grave, and the dedication of his novel Halfway Home (1991) to Stephen. Within
the journal, Monette thinks through the groundwork for setting up the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is currently conferred
by GLAAD each year to honor those in the media who fight homophobia. The middle of the journal additionally grapples with
the AIDS-related death of Monette's dear friend Craig (also "CPR"), a number of Monette's own personal health scares, and
a death threat levied against Monette that eventually turns violent. This portion of the journal also recounts a trip Monette
takes to England and France with his friend Victor Brown. The final third of the journal chronicles the beginnings of his
relationship with Winston (also "W," "WW," and "Winnie"), a spiritual retreat the two take to the Mojave Desert, and a complex
of sexual issues that trouble their fledgling romance. Throughout the journal, Monette alludes to spending time with his friend
Star Black and takes extensive notes on the latest news he hears about drug therapy research, public health policies, and
AIDS-related politics.
The twelfth journal simultaneously and intermittently registers developments in Monette's—suddenly thriving—literary career.
Monette describes the process of finishing and revising the novel Afterlife (1990) and writing the following novel Halfway
Home (1991). He periodically discusses taking an extensive book tour around the East Coast, Philadelphia, Las Vegas, San Francisco,
and Los Angeles to promote the former novel and records in-depth notes on the composition of the latter. While in New York
City, he visits with gay literary elites such as Edmund White and Larry Kramer. Halfway through the journal, he documents
receiving an advance to write a second memoir, which he furiously brainstorms on the pages of the journal and which becomes
the National Book Award winning autobiography Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story (1992). Some of the entries detailing the
memoir's composition are densely packed and feature notes that are much worked over with circles, arrows, and brackets. Throughout,
Monette jots down ideas for a variety of speeches he gives, particularly those delivered on plenary panels at UCLA and in
Miami. Monette briefly mentions novelizing the movie Havana and alludes to working on episodes for the television series 30
Something and Who's the Boss with his writing partner Alfred Sole. During this period, he comments on attending Vito Russo's
memorial service and socializing with Judith Light, Michael Lassel, Carol Muske-Dukes, Eloise Klein-Healy, David Groff, and
Michael Denneny.
The twelfth journal includes a number of notable features, perhaps most significantly the rough drafts of two poems: "Committing
to Memory" and an unpublished poem entitled "D-Day." Written in the front flyleaf of the journal is the Hindu mantra "om namah
sivayah" and two phone numbers. Discoloration is extant between the front flyleaf and the first page of the journal indicating
that an item once inserted there is now missing. On the journal's back flyleaf, Monette drafts his epitaph: "Paul Monette
/ 1945-199 / LIES HERE AT LAST." Taped to the inside of the back cover is a photograph of Monette and Craig standing in front
of the Washington Monument and the AIDS Quilt. A phone number is written beside this photograph. Toward the end of the journal
are notes Monette writes in preparation for Craig's memorial service. The last three pages of the journal contain three lists
from the 1989 and 1990 holiday seasons in which Monette catalogs the presents he purchases and the cards he sends.

Journal Thirteen

In the last of his thirteen journals, dating from June 26, 1991 to July 29, 1992, Paul Monette primarily records notes on
emerging AIDS research and explores his feelings about Winston Wilde, his third and final significant other.
The thirteenth journal, the shortest of the thirteen, begins by referring to an unspecified accident that leaves Monette feeling
"disabled" and increasingly preoccupied with the state of his health. In the first entry, Monette additionally mentions completing
the sixth chapter of his National Book Award Winning memoir Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story (1992) and remarks that his
friends—who he lists as Gary (also referred to as "GB"), Victor Brown, and Charles Jordan (also "Chuck")—are " freaked out
or Twilight Zoned" by the AIDS crisis. For the most part, the journal registers notes Monette takes either at community forums
on the biomedical dimensions of the crisis held by Dr. Mark Katz at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles and by the Delaney
AIDS Research Enterprise or during his therapy sessions with Sam Dubreville. In the latter set of these entries, Monette works
to transform his growing sense of fragility and mortality into a renewed zest for living as well as address what he views
as childish and manipulative tendencies in Winston (also "WW," "W," and "Winnie"). Monette explores his feelings about Winston's
sexual fetishes and proclivities as well. In the penultimate passage of the thirteenth journal, which was written two and
a half years before his eventual death from AIDS-related complications, Monette writes, "I like being alive; I like living—but
one tires of the threat upon one's life and the cloudy future" (page 20; original underlining).
Monette filled up less than 30 pages of the 160-page journal. Pages 24 through 155 of the journal, as well as pages 158 and
159, are left blank. However, tucked between pages 58 and 59 is a receipt that seems to have been for the journal itself and
wedged between pages 116 and 117 is a stub from a United Airlines ticket (from Los Angeles to New York). Also, a few notable
features appear at the back of the journal. On pages 156 and 157, Monette composes the rough draft of the third movement of
his poem "Committing to Memory." He dates its composition as occurring "Xmas '91." On the final page of the journal, Monette
catalogs the names of those to whom he sends Christmas cards and for whom he buys presents during, presumably, the 1991 holiday
season.
